    What to do...what to do.

So I get home from work last night, and my wife tells me that around 11 AM there was an ambulance, two police cars, and a fire truck parked outside the neighbor's house. Turns out that my neighbor attempted suicide by stabbing himself in the chest. He missed his heart by 1/2". After emergency surgery, he's in critical condition in the ICU at the local hospital. Even though we're not close, I feel like I should do something for the guy since that'd be the decent thing to do. I don't know what though and that's bothering me. Any suggestions? This is a heavy time.

Well, he was trying to kill himself.
What could you do to help him?

Offer to help him out once he returns home - go to the store for him or something like that. Perhaps you and your wife could make him some dinners he could freeze or just buy him a bag of groceries.

Bottom line is - the guy was feeling hopeless, worthless and alone. Show him he's not.

But now he's got the confidence of knowing he's such a failure that he couldn't even off himself.

Your neighbor may well be facing criminal charges next. Attempted suicide is attempted murder, after all.

Fuck it. Sort his mail or something. Pick up after his dog. IS he alone, or does he have a family/SO?

That's the fucked up thing. Guy is in his mid 40s, divorced, with 4 kids living with him. He has a big extended family who live in the SLC area.

Not too much you can do, since you do not know him well.
But, he is a neighbor, and a human being, so send him a card or flowers and tell him you think his kids are great or whatever, or blah blah blah, just to pump him up and get him to get help and get better.
You can offer to help or get involved, but what can you (or want to) do?

He does live next door to you , though, and if you aint moving, you at least want him to get better.

P.S. - knife to the heart? ouch!!!
