Well, Alcohol and Marijuana are a bit different in their nature and in social acceptance. I don't drink or smoke when I ride.

I think snowboards and skis that have Bud Light or Red Hook Ales advertised on them are bullshit.

Could you give me some examples of marketing schemes that promote alcohol?

Right or wrong and all politics put aside: Pot is still an illegal substance where as booze is not.

Does backcountry, burton, or patagucci support initiatives for de-felonization or legalization?

If they don't they should, considering they are supplying the makings of a paraphenalia bust.

Not so much the marketing schemes but the social acceptance. Americans love to drink alcohol. Many combine it with recreational activities such as skiing and some even promote the drunkerdness (saucer boy) as part of their image. When alcohol is promoted it’s portrayed as cool, when MJ is promoted, people just think they are a bunch of stoners.

To put it in you own words…its bullshit.

Our society is extremely hypocritical for allowing alcohol to be legal and MJ to be illegal. It’s ludicrous...but very typical.

    You're not serious, are you?

You see saucer boy and selling "420 kits" as analagous? You think saucer boy's persona sells jack? It's parody, for fuck's sake.

The legalization issue is a totally separate issue from the bad marketing discussion.

I don't smoke, but I know plenty of skiers who do. I don't judge them for it.

Patagonia has a long history of using double entendres in their ads, anyone remember the 'sole of the sport' ad with Carl Skoog's wrinkled feet?

The backcountry.com item made me burst out laughing.

When it comes to legalizing pot, I see it as similar to the (controversial) drinking age. Few people follow the law, and the law is pretty arbitrary. The line has to be drawn somewhere, and for various reasons it was decided that people under 21 shouldn't drink, and pot should be illegal. Though I might disagree with the law, I can see how it came about. Fine.

The ads that bug me the most are those selling SUVs and/or alcohol in skiing/climbing magazines.

I don't care if it's legal or not, I'm still gonna do it and I don't need any "420 kit" or ski attire/gear to help me do it. I'm not out to advertise that shit.

Huh? Have you seen the stats on how many Americans admit to smoking? Right up there with alcohol.

Funny ad though, I've got to hand it to the marketing department at Patagonia.

Would hate to see these stats for CO mountain towns. Alcohol wouldn't stand a chance.

Oh yea, celebrity death match between Ashcroft and Gonzales.

What's funny about the timing of this thread is that we were just talking about not doing any more print ads but seeing the stink made about this thread makes me re-consider our ad contract. This begs the question of how close to the edge does a marketer need to go in order to get your attention, to have you remember their ad? We went near the edge, and someone took notice. Irresponsible? or Effective?

We've gotten hate mail before on the 420 kit and Burton's "official" response is that it's a tool kit. But they won't tell you what type of tools. Selling over 2000+ of those in less than a year is the supply/demand of the marketplace.
