She's still got a pole in her hand when she hits the fence. Hard to tell what happens with the pole exactly, but it could have somehow punctured her left side in the collision.

I've come to the conclusion that everyone inside the fence should have this uniform. Maneuverability in multiple ways to limit any type of collision.

    the photo above is the first ( Red) gate MS demolished ;
She also tumbled through the second ( Blue) gate --
'arm-chair quarterback-ing', the gate impact does seem like the most-likely cause of the ( "stab" ) wound, though it may never be know.

wishing MS a speedy recovery And return to racing.!
So Glad if she avoided a season-ending injury (!)

oh. And gear-awaiting- use ( skis and packs ) needs to be on the owner's back, or outside the fencing
(( otherwise, I do not believe photographers need to be inside the fence ! ))

We’ll just have to wait for the Zapruder film… Back and to the Left, Back and to the Left, Back and to the Left.

    Where was Mike Day? Alibi?

Ski race dad, course worker, coach, net puller etc. here.
Skis and bags inside the net is bush league, even at U12 events. Whether it was the gate or not that gear should not have been in the course.

At least don't place your shit in the trajectory of where a fall would directly take you on that course based on gate placement. If that guy put his shit uphill a bit it woulda been much harder to hit.

I do find it funny that Mikela states on video a couple times "We can't figure it out" and all the armchair TGR dudes are like "this is probably what happened!"

She may know exactly what happened though and she is being polite to avoid online harassment of the ding dong who left his bag with his extra layer, lunchables and spare lenses right in the way.

Zapruder film is in… self inflicted ski pole puncture when the release able wrist strap plastic clip let go. I bet Leki is responsible and the poles are long gone… Disappeared. Bushwacka may confirm.

Seems hard to believe with all the video angles and still camera shots that they haven't narrowed it down, at a minimum, one of two possibilities.

This is not a normal ski injury. Somebody should be demanding an answer and determining how to avoid this in the future. A deep stab wound is pretty serious shit. She was lucky.

Im saying it’s either the tip of the ski that came off, the pole that ended up hanging off the second gate or a combination of the two or even an interaction between the pole and the gate since she had a pretty good contusion/road rash right next to the penetration wound.

I have not sat and watched frame by frame, but based on the description Mikaela provided on a narrow stab wound that can't be stitched up for fear of infection setting in, I'd say if it was not a gate (splintering does not seem like it happened), then ski pole tip, or if it is a ski brake from her ski that did release or the ones over by the fence if in fact she hit a worker or photographer's skis.

Any rate, may never know. Hope she heals up and can get back to racing and winning of course.

I think she's being the sweetheart that she is and is staying positive like she always does. I wouldn't doubt that she knows what happened but is kinda like-- "People make mistakes, I'm fine, let's keep moving forward, I forgive."

It was a pretty freak accident. I get that nothing should be inside the fence, but still, the chances of this happening are kind of insane. That could have been really, really bad.

So really impressed with Mikaela Shiffrin and her handling of this and her other adverse situations in recent years. Whether it was her injury and crash last year and recovery, or her death of her father and all, and now this, l just read her post that she mentions to the best of her and also discussing her teams review what she said about the cause and where in the crash she things she was impaled:

Her own words: "There’s been a lot of speculation about what caused the puncture wound…and a lot of discussion around the “clean hill initiative”. Some are saying the b-net pin, some are saying the base of the gate, some are speculating about the backpack next to the b-net. Of course, I am fully in support of more safety measures on hill. But, I think in my case, the damage was done before I got close to the net…and in addition to my own coaches and the volunteers who helped me, I want to thank Jojo (coach for Switzerland) who was first to get to me and helped soo so much. After reviewing the video several times, we think it was the tip of my ski pole…given the size and shape of the point of entry. Maybe it pierced in, and then I rolled over it which is what dug out the small cavern… hard to say, really. We’re just glad it’s limited to muscle damage."

So while she does mention that the B fencing and the backpack probably should have not been there, she thinks what a few have speculated on here that it seems most likely it was a ski pole tip.

Wish her all the best as she recovers and hopefully avoids any infection and there is no muscle damage that is a result. She also of course is thankful that her organs were not involved and are in tact.

There is a pretty graphic photo of her area of the injury both on her Instagram and Facebook official page:

So they had been trying to drain the puncture injury and using a Vac to remove fluids and of course try and keep from any infection. Mikaela posted a video (Instagram and also now a reel on FB) about having to get surgery due to issues with the puncture.

Hope she has a Merry Christmas and the New Year brings her back to full health and recovery in 2025 ...

yeah, she posted a video of her after she woke up but was still way groggy; it was kinda funny. Apparently, that's a thing with the young uns these days; my teen daughter was recently showing me a bunch of videos like the one Mikaela posted, because she thought they were hilarious.

MS Out indefinitely following surgical treatment of the puncture wound from Killington GS -
reported to SkiRacing, she had a deep hematoma that was not healing with conservative management and a section of oblique muscle torn from her pelvis that was surgically reattached.
    Timeline for return is indefinite.

One of the baddest women alive. I wish her a speedy recovery and hope she enjoys the holidays and a bit of time off.
