Ever since her dad died and covid started, her path hasn't been on the straight and narrow. I'm sure we're all pulling for her to get back in the saddle, but clearly the distractions have made it tough. She's always seemed to me to have had a tiny bit of an air of fragility lurking...maybe more than someone like Vonn showed.... I may be wrong... or "fragility" is too strong of a word.

That said, she is the GOAT in a single discipline.... and is still capable of overtaking Vonn and Stenmark for most WC wins all time. The road won't be as easy now that Vlhova has become the premier SL skier.

If she gets through the DH training and final, I'd have to put her as the favorite for the combined.

OT, let's all be pulling for Nina O'Brien to make a full recovery! That was a gruesome injury...

    Shiffrin

Yeah I think it’s a little disrespectful to call her the GOAT. She’s the slalom GOAT and one of the best of all time but Vonn was clearly the better downhill and super G skier by a huge margin. Not to mention her 5 wins in combined. Granted MS is far from finished.

MS looked strong in the third DH training run. She had a top 20 finish despite almost over flying this tricky jump/gate...

Hi, this is a reminder that hackers have been getting into accounts with stsle old passwords and causing mayhem scamming people in gear swap.

Update your passwords, be wary in gear swap, report suspect activity!

Yeah. I don’t know if it’s mental or physical, or both, but I hope she takes whatever time she needs to get right

There was a really good post from her on FB. She talked about peoples media expectations of her. I think she’s been calling it for days she is great and will do great things. Just not today

Seems about time for her to have a life. Maybe bang out some kids

You think about it. She has been at this a long time

    This:
    https://hiddenbrain.org/podcast/stage-fright/
Really breaks down what may be happening for her. The science of professional musicians/athletes etc. and what we call "choking." Basically what happens when the best of the best bring their unconscious/muscle/body memory in the the conscious part of the brain rather than relying on the unconscious expertise. Who knows...she's obviously still amazing.

IMHO, I think the man made snow threw her off, then with 2 DNF's it was in her head. She just didn't look right trying to recover, like she gave up

No clue and prefacing this as such.. Best guess is she's lost the sweetspot between too conservative and pushing too hard. That sweetspot for her was the best in the world when she hits it. Pushing too hard last three DQs. Gotta think all the changes, coaches, and especially a serious relationship contribute to the loss of ability to find that sweetspot..

She can definitely get that all sorted out and dominate again soon if she chooses to.. But, agreed that she deserves a break and some time off to enjoy her new life on a family track if she opts for that now instead of later..

She finally showed us she's human. Her stats on finishing races must be the best, or close to the best in FIS ever

Shiffrin was 5th based on her DH time, 0.6% off from 1st. She was ahead of the SL specialists. She blew a gate. If she hadn't, probably Gold. Shit happens.

11 out of 26 of the field DNF including 3 of 4 team USA and 90% of DNFs were on SL. That is about what has been happening the whole alpine Olympics, men and women. Fuck the CCP artificial snow and crap courses. It is risky as fuck and elite athletes take risks.

You folks who are doing the doom and gloom obsessive analysis of her psyche need to get out and go skiing! She'll figure it out and do what's right for her.

    Don’t underestimate a back injury.
You can’t do anything normal with a bad back. It messes with your whole body and that messes with your mind.

    Gutted for her.

I'm just glad I've gotten to watch her come up from a teenager to the complete badass she is. If it continues for 10 more years, cool... If not... Cool.
Hope she gets another SL win just so she knows she's still a complete badass.

Absolutely. Like being physically gaslighted. One moment is pain-free and the next the skis don't quite get the signal you sent.

Seems like the speed events give a better chance to manage that than the SL if her back isn't quite where it should be, too.

I got flamed for suggesting she's still in a skechy/dangerous place due to losing her father. I'm still all in on that being a big factor.

But back on current topic.. It can be a good thing if she's thinking more about her love life and family future than a ski race too.. If that's what she wants now I'm good with that.

I think she is the best slalom skier on the ladies side ever. She's had a brutal year. (Dad, Back, Covid) Any one of those could justify an off year. All three together.
It's not like she took a spot from another American at every world cup event and in training for years and then switched teams. There are people out their I feel disdain towards. Shiffrin and Vonn both get nothing but my support. Many athletes have a tough Olympics. She's even handled the adversity with grace.

Her dad died in February 2020.
