Ski photographer friend of mine shared this on FB today:

"Several years ago when I asked Mikaela Shiffrin about Emma, and she spoke for a long while about her dear friend, and we both has tears in our eyes as she shared how inspirational Emma is. The most beautiful thing in ski racing is the embrace that the two of them shared today when Mikaela won the World Championship Slalom in the same place they met 7 years later. "

    Edit:

Yep, she has won it. If she fell the next two SL races and Vlhova won, she'd win by 3 points.

I hope she can clinch the GS title as well. Needs a win+Worley DNF/DSQ or win+top 30 finish.

As far as I can tell she has it clinched.
There are only two SL races remaining.
Even if Mikaela DNF'd both races she would still beat Vlhova by 3 points.

If Vlhova had finished 7th instead of 8th, she would still have a chance and would win by 1 point if Shiffrin DNF'd x2.

It's always terrible. The bigger the stage, the worse it gets. My favorite is Lisa Salters at Ligety's first gold medal trying to play up the underdog story, saying, "I've never heard of him." He was third in the slalom overall standings going into the race...

    Shiffrin clinches the Overall Globe.
Shiffrin has a 719 point lead over Vlhova. With 2 races canceled in Sochi this weekend, there is only 700 overall points left up for grabs. So she woke up this morning with news that she has won the Overall Globe.
She also has the SL Globe clinched.
She is leading the GS globe by 81 points with 200 GS points still up for grabs.
She is also leads the Super G standings by 32 points. She decided not to travel and race in Sochi. Depending on if Sochi can get a Super G off tomorrow in the bad weather, and who get points, she could race the Super G at the World Cup Finals and potentially get that globe as well.
3 Overall Globes in 3 years, and only 23 years old .... crazy stuff.

    Thanks for the math.
Couldn't happen to a better person.
She's pretty easy to get behind.
    Specially compared to LV.

She is a beast. I firmly believe we are watching history. 57 WC wins, 23 yrs old.

    Some other unreal details:

    152 WC starts
79 podiums (going on memory, may be off a few) , so on the podium 52% of the time
    Wins 38% of her starts.

Extrapolate to a career taking her to say 33 or 34 yrs old? It boggles the mind. I know it isn’t a straight line extrapolation, but certainly looks like Stenmark’s record of win total is all but done. Assuming no major injuries, but I think she is managing herself well to avoid those so far.

Sounds like she's going to race in the last SG races as well. Going for 3 discipline globes.

No time left for make up dates. Women are racing GS and SL this weekend in Czech, then straight to Andorra for the Finals starting on Monday.

She had a social post yesterday with a photo of her on her SG skis. She said something like “yep those are my SG skis, so you know what that means...”
The math looks pretty good that she can win the SG globe if she finishes in the top 8ish.

As staggering as those stats are, here is the precedent set by Anne-Marie Moser-Proll.

    Seasons 11 – (1969–80, no '76)
    Individual wins 62
    Indiv. podiums 113
    Indiv. starts 174

    36% wins, 65% podiums.

She won the WC Overall 5 yrs in a row between ages 17-21. She didn't ski at all at age 22 in 1976 missing the WC and the Olympics because she was taking care of her father who was sick with lung cancer, then she retired at 26. I think she still holds a record for consecutive wins in a discipline with 11 in a row in the DH. My take is IF they had held the SG during her time (didn't start as an event until 3 yrs after she retired) then Stenmark likely would have still been chasing her record when he retired.

The fact that Shiffrin is on this kind of career pace speaks to how rare a generational talent she is.

Vlhova won today, didn't get to see either run but sounded like Shiffrin just wasn't great 1st run.

Still, Worley didn't come top 3 and Shiffrin did, pushing her lead in the GS globe to 97 points over Vlhova.

There is 1 GS left. All Shiffrin has to do to win it is either:

    A. Win the race
    B. Come top 27 if Vlhova wins.
    C. Watch Vlhova fall.

    Edit:

Also Mofro, I don't think they had Combined either, so she did that in just 3!!! disciplines.

    Thank you for this --

A-M Moser-Proll was a little ahead of my time ( post'76 ) and I never really understood what she was about...

The Combined - a World Championship calculation - was added as an event in the 1980s, and then later became a separately raced event a few years later ( we could look it up ) …

    ha(!) '76 Olympic women's DH : Rosi M. and

A-M M-Proll came back to win in Lake Placid (1980) after having won Silver ( If I understood ) in '72 .

    Thanks for the history... tj

( finally, it appears it is both Proll (with an umlaut (German (Austrian)) and Proell ( for English pronunciation) are correct.

    ' Sorry - I am that way. )

At the end he says if you add up all wins total from the other racers all time they had 19 and MS has 15 this season...that’s crazy
