Quick Mammy report: pres day = Awesome

Wow, what a sleeper of an amazing day. The day dawned with about 6" of new and it was still snowing and supposed to keep snowing. Mrs. Comish and I got to 25 and waited until about 9 when they finally opened it and 22 due to Avi control. Scored nice fresh down the front side of Lincoln, but the big bumps from the remains of yesterday's pow were present and accounted for. There was prolly closer to a foot of fresh where the wind blew it in. A few more nice laps on Lincoln were had and Mrs. Comish who is recovering from the plague (or maybe Rusty's Asian bird flu???) was done early. I was only going to ski till 11:30 or noon, but then noticed gondi 2 running!?!?!? Schweet. It had been closed all day Sunday so I knew there would be some deep pow waiting. Cruise over there and surprise surprise, NO LINE. A couple of maching schweet laps in the Paranoids were had. Awesome boot to knee deep and very lovely softness for the whole line. Then it was time for stash xxx. Wow! deep freshies were cycled for 4 or 5 laps. Hardly crossing any tracks and it was deeeep. Not quite the nipple deep of 3 weeks ago, but somewhere in the knee to thigh on my Sugar Daddy's. Final lap was made to the far side of stash xxx where there hadn't been a single track!!! but I did have to put in the exit traverse track in seeing as how no one had been out there! That was not particularly fun, but totally worth it. To be cutting completely untracked lines on Pres day at 1:30 =

Damn, what a good day. It warmed up as the day went on and the snowlevel was rising to Mammoth airport so stuff was definitely getting heavier, but still no Sierra Cement here.

On the ride home witnessed one of the better recoveries / best driving luck in a while. It was fricken pouring on the 14. Total monsoon. Small sedan 2 or 3 lanes to the right starts to push / hydroplane left. Now he is fish tailing. Dude right in front of me slows and moves toward the median as we are in the carpool line. The small sedan slides rapidly toward the center barrier as it looks like he might go for the difficule 360 at 55 miles an hour across 3 lanes of LA traffic, then somehow gets it together enough to start sliding the other way. Now he is sliding sideways across 4 lanes of LA freeway. I'm braking and praying the dude behind me can slow down as I avoid the guy in front of me who is avoiding the guy sliding all over the place. Somehow the sliding sedan goes sideways across the whole freeway without anyone hitting him = amazing and manages to get it going straight right before slamming into the side barrier. Damn! He definitely must have shat his pants.

Hope others got some. Sierra's still going off! Sorry, no picts as I was solo.
He who has the most fun wins!

    yes

yes it has been going off here.
It's dumping again as I write this. my house is so buried.
This last week or so has just been a blur of faceshots. Skied June today- blower waist deep T to B (ob at least). Skied one of the steep shots over by Devil's Slide that was so deep it was scary- the frenzy of being up to my tits on a killer 40 degree face was moderated somewhat when I realized that we might die. raced down one of the deepest runs I've ever had- whimpering with fear and hunching my shoulders against the expected flood of snow the whole way.
With all the massive dumpage, I've seen more and bigger slides than anything since 96- huge crowns all over the place. and yet it has stabilized almost immediately after every storm.
With the low snowlines and huge pack, Mammoth locals dropped some seriously huge descents last week:
Two parties skied the N couloir on williamson- 9,000'+ vert in full winter conditions on the biggest face in the range- probably the most badass ski that will go down in the lower 48 this season.
Scheelite Chute near Bishop- at about 7,000' vert the longest continuous couloir in the sierra.
Dozen's of people have skied Mt Tom, and many of the steeper, more intimidating couloirs have been skied in full-on powder- Emerson, Laurel, Humpreys, Pete's Dream, etc.
skiing powder off the summit of a 13er all the way down the desert is fucking insane.

Speaking of nuts, I skied Balls this morning and it was about that deep... and it was so good I had to grab a friend and go back for a second time. Feel free to call me chickenshit because it's only a 15 footer right now.

H-wood: holy crap, I usually try to stay in the loop, but I hadn't even heard that people hit Williamson and Scheelite in the past week. But then you didn't mention BCD's Mayfield romp.

Soon as this current cycle settles down a little I'm so up for a big peak or two.

edit: faack, someone had me thinking what I hit was Huevos Grande when in fact it was the mandatory-air chute called Balls. Ya got "little" Huevos way over by the boneyard next to Dave's, then Huevos Grandes higher and skier's left of that, and then Balls is a whole chute of its own, still more skier's left, off the Top.

there isn't much of a loop

the ski community here is pretty loose, but I did hear about those guys skiing Mayfield Canyon/Round Valley Couloir- and skinning up it (!) another party (chris pondella, ryan boyer and some others) 'biled around back and skied it that week as well- probably a little easier. That line hasn't been skiable since 98. I imagine Chris has been taking pictures, so there might be something on all this peak skiing in Powder next year.

Yes, this weekend did not suck. Didn't head up with high expectations as the president's weekend crowds are usually out of control. Saturday morning was surpisingly empty with a bit of fresh. Sunday and Monday were spent tracking up the little area up the road from Mammoth, fresh lines bell to bell Good times...

Sorry for the lack of pics, took a nasty tumble out on the tail and discovered my pack ripped open and camera gone the only bummer of the weekend

I just have to take it for another year or two. Then a change in venue is in order.
