Cuisinart and the wife loves it...mostly for her fruit smoothies.
I bought the red kitchen aid from target for the same purpose. It had good reviews and matched a few other appliances.
They have several color options: http://www.target.com/p/kitchenaid-2...4&term=blender

Sport for a Bamix. My folks' first one lasted 15 years. They replaced it with something else that didn't work that well and crapped out after a few years. Just got the old man a new Bamix for Christmas.
I have one that's been going strong for 7-8 years. The thing is a tank.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.
Cuisinart works well for us and was inexpensive. It came with a small food processor attachment that you click the motor onto and it spins a blade. Pretty handy.
goodwill. see them there all the time and the one I got there works great for $4.99.
Don't need anything fancy, really.
The real trick here is the chinoise.
I dont know the brand, but Big Lou uses one all the time. Yesterdays menu included basil parmesan tomateo soup made with a immersion blender, and garlic cheese bread. I think she has a cordless one too, never seen her use it though.

Bought my Cuisinart in 2006 for $50 (including the mini-chopper attachment) and it's still going strong with use at least a couple of times a week. No need to spend more, IMHO.
Favorite uses other than soup:
- Quick hummus with a can of chick peas, clove of garlic, lemon juice, tahini and olive oil
- Quick neopolitan-style pizza sauce with a can of San Marzano tomatoes, a little olive oil and some S&P
- "Mayo"/"aioli" with silken tofu, canola oil, mustard, and garlic (plus any herbs you might like)
- Salad dressings (cilantro vinegarette - a bunch of cilantro, lime juice and/or cider vinegar, corn oil, agave nectar, garlic, and S&P - also really good on tacos)
- Enchilada sauce - toast dried ancho and NM chiles in a pan or toaster oven, soak in water, then blend with some cumin, Mexican oregano, roasted garlic, and enough soaking liquid to make a paste. Thin with chicken stock.
Probably the most useful small appliance in the kitchen, apart from the Breville Smart Oven (that thing rocks).

My Braun has been kicking ass for over 15 years.
My dad's a pretty serious amateur chef (to the point where he had custom gas lines plumbed for a restaurant stove, etc.) and seems to like the Cuisinart he got a couple years ago. Their stuff is always pretty awesome anyway, my folks have had one of their big food processors for as long as I can remember and the little one I bought earlier this year (handy prep I think) blows away the POS ones I tried before it.
My Braun is still going strong after 25+ years. Time for a smoothie.
