    Thumbs up Loveland (11-16-03)

"Today was a good day" was playing in foggys ride as we rolled into the Loveland parking lot. Jibij, Foggy, Board and buddy were all in attendance early. Board and pal took off to make some laps on Loveland pass. Board brought along rock skis for me to use, but that would mean leaving my new boards in the bed of a truck on the highway and I was worried about theft so we the rest of us stuck to the resort. We also ran into Ubersheist by coincidence in the lift line.

They finally opened a second chair today, but we were all stuck to groomers still. I think the scenerary was probably the highlight of the day. I finally got a chance to see the goods Loveland has up higher and could see myself doing a lot of hiking and hucking up there in the future. That place a has a lot of potential for booters over rollers and cornice drops too. I can't wait to get off the groomers.

After a while we decided to head into the park. The weekend before I got into a little trouble for getting upside down so I decided to work on some other things and got worked in the process. I totally blow at rails and until I either learn the damn things or natural selection serves it purpose I'll keep on trying. One of my hips almost looks a little curvy like a womans (except bruised and filled with fluid) after one of the wrecks.

jibij has an arsenal of digi cams and video equipment. Today he broke out a video camera that was tiny, but off the hook. Unfortunately for me he put together some video of our last couple of days out. I'm stoked to finally ski at resorts that have a park, but it's going to take a lot of bruises to get the hang of all the features.

    Video from today:

    Video from last week:

Thanks to jibij for filming, thanks to foggy for driving, and thanks to board for bringing me some sticks.

Hey MD9, that's great footage and again makes me happy that I'm too old to be interested in crippling myself on man-made objects.

Sweet. Snow is in the air, trip reports are starting to appear and Baker may open this week.

Always nice to see the vids, looks like a fun day. Owens added the galleries but wouldn’t it be cool if there was a video upload section? Be cool to have 04 contributions in a little library.

No getting upside down at Loveland? Not planning on it or anything but is that a policy?

It’s so quiet, it’s so cool, it’s so cold

Not that I ever heard of. Last year people were inverting off a kicker above 6 chair and off of supernova cornice. When the big snow came people were even inverting off Mr. Rock. I don't know about the park because I never spent enough time there to see.

Yesterday I was the first person in the park, presweeping. I saw that corderoy going up the ramp and couldn't resist. But of course I had to land a bit back on my heels and jam my owie-toe really bad. I am stooopid.

They are cutting all the black terrain around chair one now. Definitely a step in the right direction.

I wish I could look at you guys' video footage. This computer sucks.

Ubersheist - if you see this, it was tres fun hooking up with you. You need to shut your trap about my age though. And thanks for the pizza. And you really need to work on your game with the ladies. Maybe you should've stayed last night - I'm feeling pretty iffy this morning about going into the backcountry because of the weather forecast. Packing skis in high winds is rough.

Sometimes I think I would be just brilliant at playing it straight in a comedy act...

But it wasn't me he flubbed it with. He went off into the trees to do his business and I was waiting at midload 2 when one of my friends shows up - a single patroller chica that he met at our summer picnic. So I'm talking it up on his behalf - telling her how impressed he was when he met her. Then he shows up and acts like he hasn't got a clue who she is.

btw Meat when you and Foggy never showed up we just assumed you were scared and you should have been cause the coverage was deep enough to provide sweet sweet powder turns but these were only ' moments of frightful joy ' because the land mines are always lurking !

Well, I didn't! You threw her at me and I was stunned like a deer caught in oncoming trafic's healights. No recollection until later that you told me that she was an aerobics instructor. Then I did remeber who whe was. I also remembered how The Real Uberdude (you know who I'm talking about a.k.a. Mogul Muncher or whoever he said he was when he made his one and only post on the pmag board) was absolutely drooling over her. Unfortunately, all this came back to me two or three chair lifts later. That was my big problem. Well, also, I got no game...

MD9- good to see you out there again! Gotta do it again!

Jibij and Foggy - real cool to meet y'all (although I'm still trying to figure out where I know you from, Foggy...) I wish I could see the video without waiting forever.. F'ing dial-up...

I fully agree with Pinner... Loveland is gonna TEAR SHIT UP!

NEVER! Not until I'm older then you!

That reminds me.. I still owe you a beer. And I'll still probably owe you more beer in the future for stupid remarks that I've yet to make!

Yeah... I woke up to a few inches outside my door, which means they certainly got more over your way... Oh well...

On brighter news, I'm currently the highest bidder on two somewhat antiquated but still highly functional avy beacons! Now I just need a probe and shovel!

Ok, I'm not sure. I've had nothing but good experiences with Ebay so far, so I'm assuming the best. Unless they've been repetatively dropped or used as hockey pucks, they should be at very least functional. Unfortunately that's neither here nor there, since I let the bid time pass me by and someone outbid me. ...

I recon your BC partners would argue that their lives are worth the price of a new beacon. You should ask them.

IMO brand spanking outta the box is the only way to go.

There's enough other places in my life I can save a few bucks that I feel I don't need to buy scrap beacons.

These are pretty durable goods, are they not? I am somewhat of a beacon JONG, but it's not like buying used tires, right? I figure that as long as I'm familiar with the model I'm getting, it'll almost certainly work and not crap out on me unless I drop it or something. The signal doesn't get weaker over time, or the coverage range diminish as beacons age, do they? Am I misguided? Please inform me!

Electronic components do wear out over time. Plastic part (like capacitiors) dry out over time changing their properties. Vibration will cause hairline cracks in the circuits, Thermal cycling (heating and cooling of components from on-off use) can cause stress cracks in components. Moisture can seep in and cause corrosion. Static electricity can damage components. A leaking battery (and they do) may cause corrosion. Exteme heat (sitting on the dash in the sun in Texas) or extreme cold (in Hillary Clinton's pocket) can damage the components.

The worst thing that can happen is that the frequency drifts or the power output drops off. Then the beacon works but has no range sending or receiving. The only way to know for sure is to use a frequency analyzer and generator. Or test it with other beacons and make sure that the range is still there. You should do that anyway.
If you have a problem & think that someone else is going to solve it for you then you have two problems.

All I know about rails is this: you detune your edges so they don't catch.
