Fox Talas 29 with tons of play between the stanchions and lowers?

Shop says its a bushing in the lowers and will require a trip back to fox or new lowers.

I don't doubt them, but do I have a chance of getting warranty help? Does their diagnosis sound right? With the front brake on it feels like a really loose headset, but the shifting comes from the lowers of the fork.

    Anyone experience this?

Warranty? How many years and/or hours on them? Routine service done?

Are you running a thru axle or a quick release?

That's usually what happens when bushings get worn. How old is the fork?
Bushings are a wear item in a fork. Unless the fork only hase like 50 hours of use or it's really bad and something is damaged inside, it's probably not a warranty issue.

The fork is about 18m old. Had seals swapped out once last spring. Its been ridden pretty hard this summer.

Are you hanging it by the front wheel for storage? That can be hard on bushings/seals.

Common issue. Repair and don't bother with warranty. The longer you ride it the worse it gets as the uppers will get eaten up...

Anyone ever seen any damage caused by hanging from the front wheel? (i.e., as opposed to already-worn-out seals/bushings/etc. that only display leaks when stored that way)

    Old thread on this:

FWIW, I've hung bikes from front or rear wheels for storage for years. Haven't noticed any problems, except for one set of Avid Juicy brakes that get mushy when the bike is stored this way for a long time. I think I just need to do a better bleed on those brakes though.

Yah. I've seen seals go from circular to slightly oval because of too little oil in the fork (no maintenance, poor qc from the manufacturer) and constant hanging. This leads to more oil coming out of the fork and contaminants getting in. Then parts wear more quickly and, with no regular maintenance, play develops. It feels like a loose headset, so you go chasing headset issues for a while, until you realize its the lowers.
