Using a shotgun for backcountry avalanche mitigation?

OK, I'm assuming I'll get dope slapped for this idea...

But say you're in the backcountry looking at a corniced line you want to ski. And assuming that you're absolutely sure that you're the only users around, nothing in the slide path.

And also that you are on a safe slope/location within shooting range of the cornice.

Would it work and be in any way smart to shoot said cornice/slope with a shotgun or other gun?(I'm assuming a shotgun with buckshot would be more effective with the spread than a rifle or handgun)

If you are going to try and bag a cornice at least be manly about it and use a compound bow.
Move upside and let the man go through...

I wonder if a 40mm would actually work if loaded with the right shells.

Come to think of it, they make 12ga grenades. Not that you could actually get them, but I wonder if they'd do any good.

I tried using a 12 gauge a couple years ago, shot a cracker round and a couple slugs at a small start zone with no results. Then tried ski cutting it and it went.

What makes avalanche control with artillery work is not hitting the slope with a projectile, it's that the projectile explodes on impact.

Of course I know. That's why I suggested he try it ;-)Just thought it'd add to the fun.

But I didn't need to see mythbusters to know it.

You are welcome to try it. The use of firearms is legal in pretty much all the national forests and wilderness areas. You cannot use exploding shells however. I'd bet a 12 or 10 gauge slug would be the best for cornices. It would not do anything to a powder slope though

I was going to say this does seem like a really dumb idea...and not safe. But I would bet some of those 12ga bird bombs, you could probably trigger an avy.
