    Jobs for a Vet?!

    Hey what's up everyone?
Here's the deal. I'm almost out of the US Navy after 6 years as an Air Traffic Controller, including a year deployment in Iraq. I've supervised up to 8 plus people in a fast paced stressful environment. The position I hold requires excellent multi-tasking, people skills, ability to think quickly and critically, and outstanding problem solving skills on short notice. I also am an avid skier having grown up kust south of Sun Valley. I have lived/ skied all over the west and Canada to include Baldy, Bachelor, Stevens Pass, Brighton, Alta, etc, and most recently Mt Baker. I also have 6 years experience as an EMT in Idaho, Oregon, and Las Vegas as an EMT prior to joining the military. Now to the point, haha! Skiing is my passion and I would love to land a decent paying job in the ski industry. I know we all want this, but Im putting this out here hoping someone will take notice. Im passionate about brands such as Smith Optics seeing as they are based from my home area, their products are top notch and I've rocked them for over ten years. Im also a huge fan of Patagonia because of their quality and commitment to the environment. Companies such as Arcteryx and FlyLow also seem to rep what I believe in and am interested. Obviously these type of companies are what I would love to work for but honestly as long as it has to to with the ski industry and protecting it I'm interested. This is probably a long shot but if you have any leads let me m know!

    Cheers!!

Not ski industry but if you want to consider utilizing your Vet preference for Fed work I can check with our HR people at Grand Teton NP and see if anything good is opening up soon.
Something about the wrinkle in your forehead tells me there's a fit about to get thrown
And I never hear a single word you say when you tell me not to have my fun
It's the same old shit that I ain't gonna take off anyone.
and I never had a shortage of people tryin' to warn me about the dangers I pose to myself.

You already know what EMS pays.

Why not do civilian ATC in somewhere like SLC or Reno? I think Jumper Bones does that now and he is a vet. http://www.tetongravity.com/forums/m...9-Jumper-Bones

Do you have a college degree? I have worked with some vets in the federal government who used the new GI Bill money to go back and complete a degree at night while working in civilian federal employment during the day. The veterans hiring preference will boot your resume to the top of the pile for gov't employment right now.

But also - like Summit said: if you have the ATC skill set, getting a position at a mountain town airport seems like it would be pretty great unless you're sick of it.

Might look at the ESGR. Companies like Chris Reeve Knives (in Boise) is very active in ESGR and hires a lot of vets.

Not Ski industry, but FAA has a Big Air traffic control center in Auburn WA. Not too far from Crystal mountain.

Fellow vet here. I recommend you knock out a degree. Notice lack of specificity there. As long as you have a Bachelors in just about anything including underwater basket weaving, you'll be set to check that block. Contrary to the vast majority of civilians out there in the workforce you already have military service and experience - only thing you're lacking is a piece of paper stating that you can breathe with your mouth closed.

Go the absolutely easiest route possible. If you get in touch with someone at AMU or any other veteran friendly university, you may find yourself surprised at the amount of credit you'll receive. Potentially you're less than a year or two away from having an undergrad degree. The post 9/11 GI Bill is a slamming deal and will more than cover your schooling costs.

ATC is a good field for you to continue in while you undergo your transition to a new life. The first few years can be both incredibly rewarding and unbelievably frustrating at the same time. I transitioned to work abroad after an extremely frustrating year. Wanted to reenlist every single day until I finally found the right environment, in Iraq, nonetheless. But it gave me a good transition, time to work on school (it's going to have taken almost 8 years for me to finish my Bachelors) and allowed me to explore lots of different places to live.

Today, 14 years ago, I enlisted. It's been a huge ride since and I'm starting to again transition into a different part of my life. Now towards a life where I'd like to remain CONUS 100% of the time. Nothing happens over night but I'll tell you that you're probably going to hit a few different forks in the road towards your goal of working for one of these companies. Maybe you'll end up in charge of a small airport like Jackson. Who knows. Just make sure you get the degree block checked, don't do anything stupid like getting a DUI and live well within your means.

    Best of luck to you.

I'll just jump back in here because I mentioned the idea of finishing a degree at night school. Be very skeptical about the for-profit colleges out there, including the one the poster above me mentioned. The guys who I've worked with who have done well with the GI Bill education have done degree combos like WVU (in-state)/ JHU (private, non-profit) or JMU/UVA (both in-state). There are many traditional schools (both community college and 4-year) that have night coursework, extension campuses, and online programs that are worth looking into.

Many of the private for-profit universities market very aggressively to vets. Both the graduation and employment numbers are often dismal. Just be very sure to do your homework before committing to this kind of institution.

Thanks everyone for your input. Im definitely looking into contract towers. I know Serco has openings in Jackson, Mt, and Or frequently so it would be rad to get picked up there. If that doesn't work out or in the meantime I will go to school more than likely for something in the medical field such as a Physician's Assistant or Nursing. Going back to Emt/Paramedic school would be great but the good jobs are harder to come by and the pay isn't as good. So we will see how it goes. Thanks again for your input!

Not sure what you're skeptical about. AMU isn't ITT or a diploma mill. You're painting with a broad brush.

Graduation and employment numbers are dismal? As opposed to a traditional brick and mortar school? Right. Hence all those employed people with MBA's...
