Nice to link up SFB, we'll have to do it again sometime.

Tanner was skiing solitude for the first time the other day, what a warm welcome. I had no idea how crowded it gets up there....

There were only about 10 of us lapping Headwall Forest this morning, on some runs the only tracks I crossed were my own...

^^^^ surprised we didn't see ya, but the way everybody was bundled up hard to tell who was who. Did a few creamy pow laps in scree hoping egp would open. They got the milk run gates open but the Mrs. was frostnipped
    so we bailed.
Nice edit provo people have preconsieved notions about certain pros but I got to say your bro sure came off as just another skier stoked to be back from rehabin injuries and enjoying the nov powder blessing that was bestowed on us.
Hope to ski you guys back at the tude once the good off fantsey are filled in and open.

many moons ago i was working and living at alta. one day out on a tour i decided to ski down to brighton and catch the bus down/around, and back up lcc for home. i'd never been in bcc and on my ride down on the bus i looked over my left shoulder and saw eden. wide open spaces with a couple of lifts and barely any skiers........on a powder day. right then and there i promised myself that if i ever spent another winter in foofyland, it would have to be working and skiing solitude. the day i left alta was the last time i skied alta 15 years ago. 5 years after leaving alta i made that promise reality and what a wonderful reality that was. a WHOLE different world there. a different sport really. looking forward to this winters visit.

I too happened to hit the Sumitt Lift opening. 33" new in the previous 48 hours, and viturally nobody there. 80% of the chairs were empty, no shit! Had a completely untracked run with face shots on the last run of the day while people were getting their hair blown off by the wind at the top of the Snowbird tram. Unfortuately, we had to leave before they opened Honeycomb, but still had enough pre-Thanksgiving pow to kick off the seaon with a renewed love for Solitude.

Solisunday was a great day in the sun but solisaturday had more powder than people to ski it. We were still skiing untracked at 3. Having a blast so far this season. Here's a shot from Saturday

After skiing Solitude for over 20 years, having a pass for the last 8, I finally busted my Fantasy cherry today.

I've looked up there for years, my friends have been up on numerous occasions. Every time they'd make the hike I'd beg off and go ski something else. I almost had myself convinced a few times last year, but each time something came up and I never went up.

Today was a beautiful day and we went out one of the gates to find fantastic snow. On our way back up the summit my riding partners decided today was a Fantasy day, I slowly convinced myself as the chair made it's way up to the top.

Once we got to the top I couldn't figure out an excuse, I had my pack, I was beeping, I even had the velcro strap to keep my tips together. I was screwed, I was at the beginning of the bootpack and I couldn't figure out a reason not to go.

So, I strapped my skis to my pack and we started up. It wasn't too bad until we got the the first steep spot. The first part of it wasn't bad, a cable made upwards progress a little less nerve wracking. After the cable the "hike" still continues straight up, an exposed rock makes the way up a bit nerve wracking. The rock makes your toehold about three inches deep, you have to commit to it with a fairly significant drop below you if you happen to mess up.

The rest of the hike is basically a snow covered stair stepper, there are a few other spots with cables that make it a bit sporty. I overheated a few times on the way up, I felt my face flush with fear and overexertion. I was never so happy to finally make it up the final push to flat ground.

The skiing was rather uneventful, I think we skied 12. (I'm not sure) It was an exciting entrance to a fairly low angle chute leading to smooth turns on the lower apron.

I was pretty happy to have finally ticked off the Fantasy hike. Although it was scary, it wasn't really as fearful as my mind had made it out to be while looking at it for the last 20 years. Just like in life, one foot in front of the other gets you up or through anything.

Congrats on starting off the New Year with such a great fantasy coming true Bob!

I haven't seen you since one of those Timberline trips years ago. I'd love to come down to ski a Sunday at Solitude with you but not likely I'll get away from Baker this year. Needless to say if you get up this way get in touch, make some turns. Happy New Year to you and the family.

I've been skiing at Solitude a lot lately (maybe 12 days in December), and had a really weird experience yesterday.

Skied in the morning with my 6-year old son while my wife skied Summit and Honeycomb with our friend Paul, then we switched places around 1:30 and I was planning on going up to Summit via Powderhorn. Skied into an empty maze with my father-in-law and Paul. Skied up to the loading line and looked over my left shoulder when I heard the lifty shout at someone behind us. I looked back and saw a guy on a snowboard with headphones holding onto the vertical part of our chair. He was struggling to stay on his feet, I'm not sure what happened. He held onto the chair long enough for the chair to be tilted about 45*, so the safety bar (equipped with footrests) came down and then when he released it, it came at us very very fast, with the bar down. No time to get out of the way. We got absolutely crushed. All three of us were knocked down and then the chair and footrests raked over our bodies. I dislocated my right shoulder (it is sitting forward of where it usually sits) and have numbness in my arm today, and basically feel like I've been hit by a car. My father-in-law went to the clinic after he couldn't walk or bend over without pain and was x-rayed and diagnosed with a cracked rib. Paul tweaked his knee and ankle and bent one of his NTN bindings.

My first thought was that I was so glad my son wasn't with us, he could have been killed. My second thought was to shout the most virulent stream of profanity at the snowboarder that I have probably ever uttered. Not sure if he could hear me, what with the skullcandy headphones. After talking to patrol, we all made our way down to the base and called it a day. I definitely won't be skiing for a while, and have identified a new way for jackasses on snowboards to hurt me.

Did patrol take a report and/or get the snowboarder's contact info?

Glad they got a report. Saw an incident at Solitude a couple weeks ago (collision) where the Solitude folks did not take much action and I was surprised a bit. I know it is a low-key spot, but this wasn't just a minor bump between folks-- two guys were apparently done for the day.

Those are some substantial injuries which I'm sorry about--apologies for not mentioning that above and I hope you guys all recover soon. Would be nice if the snowboarder paid for your medical expenses. Think he was grabbing the back of a chair to get a ride out from the lift?

Thanks. I don't know whether he just misjudged where he could stand safely to let the chair pass by and got tangled up in it, or whether he was trying to make up for the fact that he has chosen a form of snowsliding which makes efficient travel on flat surfaces awkward and difficult. Not too optimistic about getting reimbursed, its not as if most people are insured for their negligent recreational behavior. If my shoulder requires surgery, I may feel differently. I'll certainly comply with any requests from my health insurance provider for information about the incident, which may result in their pursuit of him. Now I'm just hoping it turns out to be something I can fix with a little chiro and PT.

Man, sorry to hear about this Hutch.
So dumbass behind you hold onto your chair to get pulled to the loading line???? Then lets go and the safety bar came down on you hard? Trying to visualize.....

Bummer Hutch. Here's hoping that surgery word doesn't get tossed around again. Heal up. In the meantime I will assume any snowboarder I see was the one that did this, and act accordingly.

Easy, not all boarders are like that.

I board and try to be very courteous to others, it is a family mountain (my family included).
    I ski the same way.

It comes down to treat others as you would want to be treated....in any aspect of life.

I think its more likely he just overshot the spot where he should have waited and grabbed the chair when it came around the bullwheel to avoid falling down, but then he held the bottom of the chair back, causing the bar to come down, then released it, so in addition to its normal momentum (pretty fast on Powderhorn, it being a fixed-grip) the chair had a lot of "swinging" momentum, so I think we pretty much got hit with the bottom of the chair.

Wow, that sounds more scary than I visualized. Hope you are going to be ok sooner rather than later. That chair does move so I can only imagine the force you all got hit with.

Again, sorry this happened. Let me know if I can help in any way.
