Any beta on Roundtop/Moon//Sisters? I'm planning on a full day out there via Woods Lake next Thursday if anyone is interested. The plan is to hit Moon, then one or two lines on the steeps of Sisters. I called the Ranger's office and Woods Lake parking is open but the campground is scheduled for the 15th.

I was out there this past weekend. Big sun cups forming on the face of Round Top, but from what I saw the NW side is looking okay.

I am thinking of hiking RT from woods with a couple of non skiers this weekend. How much snow is on the hiking route to the top of the peak? I will probably drive out to do some scouting.

I'm still planning on Thursday morning from Woods Lake if anyone is interested.

Harpo - From Woods Lake, I'd take the trail to Winnemucca from the left side of Woods Lake. You may hit some snow over toward the Sisters while hiking to the West under Round Top (as seen in above photo), but it my past experience, once on the ridge between Roundtop and Sisters, it will be snow-free. The trail to Roundtop Lake (bottom of Sisters) is a bit hard to follow through the rocks to the right of Woods Lake, but you can always do a loop down the other trail.

Anyone familiar with Barker Pass / Blackwood Canyon? Was thinking about checking out the Granite Chief Wilderness this weekend- looks if you drive a mile past barker pass you can park and run along Powderhorn Creek and the Five Lakes trail and pop out at Squaw. Anyone know what that road is like? I assume the paved bit to Barker pass is open - if anyone has beta on the road on the west side of the pass I'd appreciate it.

I'll through up some pics later but yesterday's mission to Roundtop and Sisters was pretty damn awesome. Super smooth corn laps with suncups only on the last pitch to Winnemucca Lake. Moon Crescent was firm in the morning but that was expected. Sisters chutes and bowls were pretty rad down to Roundtop Lake.

I was at the summit around 11:30am but it looked amazing at 5pm However, the western side corn groomer under Roundtop was creamy corn at the same time. Sisters was good at 4pm.

I just happened to be tagging along with 666 as his photo attache and I gotta say that Moon Crescent was hella firm when we were there in the morning. So much so that I gave up boot-packing about 1/5 of the way up as I couldn't dig in and get a good foot-hold. It should be noted that 666 had crampons and a whippet and I did not. Even trying to follow 666's crampon laid footsteps wasn't working. Vets was with us, too, and he chose to stay back, as well, after he saw the trouble I was having digging in steps. When we returned underneath Moon Crescent for our descent back to Winnemucca, the snow was much softer.

Also, it was hella windy when we were there, so that definitely kept the snow firmer. As 666 stated, it was softer later in the day.

Methinks if you hit it mid-day (2 ish) and on a day when it isn't windy, and have some crampons along in case, you should be good to go. Definitely want to get back there and hit it sometime, that's for sure.

Looks like Blackwood opens to the top today so if anyone is heading up there tomorrow (Sunday) and has room for an extra passenger (no skis just running shoes) from Tahoe City let me know, I have shiney monies for gas.

Is this a prank? Sugar Bowl announces it will have a new lift for next season - the Crow's Peak Lift - that accesses what was previously hike-to terrain. Unofficial story:

As an SB user, I agree - big upgrade, unless you will be mourning the loss of longer lasting fresh snow in the Fields and Glades.

I see it as mixed: tracked out quicker, but easier access. That said, if they can run it on storm days, then it's a huge plus.

And, yes, that SB Pass looks better every year. I need to convince a critical mass of friends to defect from Squaw. Been trying to do that for a couple of seasons to no avail.

It gets tracked out pretty quick already, most days, over there. If you hiked to the top of Crows Nest Peak you'd get a few fresh turns.
The BIG DEAL is whether the On-Load of the new lift will be any further over towards Royal Gorge terrain? (Skiers left from the top). If it's the same place as now then "meh..."

It would be great to be able to ski straight down without having to cut right.
The worst thing is ending up having to schlepp back from in amongst those big Houses they have down there. You only do that one time...
..I bet the "glade it out" a bit too. There's some tight tree's there.

According to this http://edocs.placer.ca.gov/viewftr.a...&docid=1344823 (you'll need to down load the linked PDF), the loading station is definitely not the same as the old chair, so pretty much continuous fall-line shot. I agree about probably "improving" some of the lines.

666 - I know it's often joked about around here, but I'm genuinely curious what the bases of your skis look like after a day like that. Not as bad as everyone figures since the dirt patches look relatively soft / loose? Superficial scratching easily fixed by a hot wax?

Well, to be honest, not as bad as one would think. A few small to medium dents in the bases was about all. If during the season, I may get a base grind tune once or twice to start over but generally I'm not concerned as long as they slide. Those skis are a few years old and will be retired to my summer standby sticks anyway.

In my experience, skiing through dirt and rocks is definitely not as bad on the sticks as maching through pow and getting bit by sharks!
