I should give thanks to the KW crew this weekend. Coop served up the stoke. Race was fun. Lift Ops, Mtn Ops and Patrol were working hard to make it happen. I can't complain about my limited KW experience.

Young Owen had a great time today. Sentinel, Wagon Wheel, Palisades..

Thanks to Driver for 2 free tix.

Thanks to Schralph Maccio for hand-delivering free skis.
Thanks to 4Matic for the free skis.
Also thanks to Schralph Maccio for introducing me to Superstar Punani.
Thanks to Superstar Punani for offering me a Coors Light. No thanks.

Planning to be there for closing next Sunday. Maybe taking a couple of bc newbies out towards Round Top on Saturday. One on skis one on a splitter.
I didn't believe in reincarnation when I was your age either.

Good snow at KW today. Good consistent corny stuff out in Pali and the line under my skis in the photo. Cold wind kept the window open all day. Not too happy about 10 being broken but shit happens. I think I might actually be starting to get the hang of this 2 plank thing.

Better over night freeze Saturday night yielded even better corn on Sunday.

It was like this last year also. I didn't check Pac saddle rd. I was guessing it was covered not far above the campground.

the last weekend of KT was a great one.

the skiing was awesome both days.

also got some dynamite laps on hogsback while waiting for west face to open yesterday.

the corn on headwall was backcountry caliber (as smooth as it gets).

thank you, squaw, for letting us ski KT into the ground!
    Still waiting...

I kept trying to put his infamous " I'M GONNA RIP THE SHIT OUT OF THIS!" to his lip movements, but it didn't seem to synch.

I am thinking about a quick trip up to Tallac this weekend. Does anyone know if the NE Ridge from Spring Creek is still 'in', or if the lack of snow makes the normal hiking trail better at this point? I am planning on booting up the whole thing (alpine setup), then ski the NE bowl.

    Any guidance is appreciated! -kb

I was gonna try to ski the south bowl on Saturday, but lack on a decent overnight freeze sent me to Carson pass instead. Friday I drove over to check the summer trailhead and the gate is still locked at 89, so you have a good mile or so of pavement hiking before you even hit the trail, I did this last November though by riding my bike up to the trail head and stashing the bike. Not sure if spring creek is still gated, if so you have another pavement approach, but I’ve also done this with the bike and just stashed it under a cabin back there. I’m sure based on the snow levels it’s gonna be a swacky Manzinta hellish hike from there any way. Fallen Leaf lake is open now and you can drive back to the fire house, Friday I drove past the fire house to the back of Stanford camp and it’s all clear. There is a somewhat secret trail from the back parking area that meets up with the summer trail near cathedral lake, parking is private though so I’m not sure it’s safe to park there (there is a fair bit of activity going on also). My plan was to park at the fire station, ride the bike to the trail and stash it. Maybe someone will have more up to date info on Spring creek, good luck.

That trail from Fallen Leaf from the back parking lot at Satanford Camp (I typed Stanford wrong and decided it looked pretty good) didn't used to be secret--it was a forest service marked trail and the road to it was--and most likely legally still is--a public easement. I started hiking there in the 70's. I guess the Stanford bullies have intimidated enough people to make it secret/private.

I see a little snow is forecast. I took off my snows today (shoulda done it months ago) so you have me to thank.

That trail is shown on my Desolation Wilderness map. Going on the public easement/trailhead assumption, I have parked and hiked at Satanford Camp without incident.

I say somewhat secret as it does not show up on most maps these days. No trespassing signs at the entrance to the camp, and no public parking signs in the end lot have intimated me enough to either get a drop off or ride my bike in. Good to hear you have had no problems shaky.

Yeah it's interesting how maps change. My older Thompson's DW map also shows a Tamarack Lake trail missing from newer maps. Must be confusing to come to a 4-way junction when your map says its a T.

For sure they've made it pretty intimidating to drive into Stanford Camp. Back in the day I was a guest there once so I go on the assumption I'm still welcome. Fallen Leaf Lake is a gem that shouldn't be locked away.

10” over towards Kirkwood & Carson go get it, I’m jealous I can’t be getting after it.

To your point Shaky, I think the first time I went up that trail was early in the AM with a headlamp so I could catch the sunrise from the summit and be back in time for work. That trail splits just before the summer trail and connects into it in two spots. There was a couple with the same plan as mine just sitting on a rock waiting for sunrise as they had gotten lost. I was thinking how could they possibly get lost and kept on hiking 10 minutes later I was back at the same spot, having made a loop in the darkness, Ha, second time around I found the way and got up there just in time. All my maps burned in the Angora fire, all my new maps except for the fine edge south lake Tahoe map do not have this trail on it anymore.

10". Fuck. Why am I sitting in the Trestles parking lot with light onshores blowing and light rain falling when there is 10" to be had? Fuck. I bet even San Jacinto is getting a little fresh today. Someone go an enjoy that snow.

And make that moderate rain. Who knew SoCal was so cold and wet?

It hasn't snowed in AK in a week, so I'm coming back. Too bad I'm on a plane, instead of somewhere useful. Go get that pow, boys!

While I don't know the specifics here, it really bugs me when people place ambiguous trespassing signage near a public easement, when they actually only own the land on either side. I'm sure they own the parking lot, but the latest USFS map shows forest service numbers for both the road (1215) and the trail (17E05).
