Typical no hike day at Alpine (to be expected given conditions/incidents) with Scott closing due to avy, YET they allowed dumbasses to traverse the bottom of High Beaver through heating hangfire all the way out to the Buttress again. And the route obviously traverses midslope on Bernies bowl (steep, wind loaded, SE facing slope with already one huge crown in it) with minimal avy work done (only canon bombs from night before as far as I could see. No patrollers has set foot past Estelle unless they had invisible tracks). Mind boggling. Alpine is trying real hard to kill someone.

^This. Nice day for a skate ski, check out the lake overlook, and let skier compaction/patrol/time settle the snowpack a little.

Maybe lay-off Alpine patrol for a while. Tough day for them.

Completely unsubsantiated, hearsay rumor, I was told someone was buried & unresponsive on Sherwood today.
    Hope it's BS.
    Anyone confirm?

Nope. Someone's not coming home today.

Saw the first guy on the right of scott chute just as he came to rest. Looking at the path he got banged up pretty good. Then heard about the second more tragic event from a chain of friends that involves the tahoe forest ER when I left at noon. That's where the chopper was going today.

And BG is right. The traversing that gets allowed with lower beaver open was putting people in some super sketchy sun heated zones. I saw natural crowns in the trees today where I've never seen activity. Logged on here to see if there was anything ELSE that went today.

Another shitty christmas for someone's family.

Unfortunately I think more bad news may be coming from unexpected places.

Condolences to those who know these victims. Were both the Donner and Alpine events in bounds?

Gimpy and I skinned the safest place we know in the south shore. Kind of surprised by the density of this last round of pow. Good time to dig and learn.

livefreeordie: there where two slides today at alpine. I'd be surprised if the guy on scott was more than just banged up.

Sierra Cement: both the ones at alpine were in bounds. The one on scott on open terrain and the other a result of trying to open the backside.

    edit: here's the bad one

Dam Splat I was hoping your prediction would not come true, vibes to all involved.

Like Sierra Cement & Gimpy I spent the day at Luther playing it as safe as possible. And yea what a density difference in the snow, was skiing boot deep at best, very happy to have fat skis and lots of rocker.

From facebook regarding the Donner slide: Rocker got caught in an avalanche above the Palisades. RIP Rocker.

Name withheld for now, those cliffs are bad news when they open after a storm like that with no AC. Regarding the Alpine slide, really hope it's not one of my friends.

The pow at AM was pretty wind effected but still fast and fun. Opted for the Roundhouse line in the morning and got 3 laps by the time Summit even started loaded.

We got one fun lap in Gentians before Scott closed due to the avy. It re-opened shortly after noon and we could see the fracture above some rocks on lookers left midway up the chair. Looks like the guy hiked up above the rocks and as soon as he skied in it fractured (unless those were patrols hike marks). Hope whoever went for a ride is OK, it did not look soft.

Stayed colder than expected all day, so the snow in most places didn't get too heavy. Areas definitely got hit hard though.

It's amazing how fast the snow consolidated, Kirkwood skied really well today. Fast and deep wind buff. A snowboarder stomped heart.

Sorry to hear about the folks on the north shore. The cirque went HUGE. Scary shit.

    Don't be too eager, Jim.
Tomorrow is when the slack/bc starts crackin cause people think it's settled.
I'd bet it's sketch as hell.

K factor created a settled consistency that didn't occur around north shore?

The snow on echo summit this morning was deep. If you were not hauling ass it was thigh deep. Nothing moved on echo but it does have a lot of manzanita that is holding the snow in place.

That being said, there was a massive natural crown on the SE facing slope of Mt. Ralston. Estimate it at 300' wide & maybe a 3-4' crown. It was actually the subpeak just south of the ralston peak. Stared at it all day once I got to sierra.

Just watched the news report on kcra about the donner victim. Pretty fucked up. How does patrol not shut down the mountain & perform a probe line immediately after the event . Even if there wasn't a report of a missing person, but even more so when there is a missing person. That was a big crown.

Vibes to the friends & family of both incidents. Hard to hear about these things after having such an awesome day. Very sobering

Kwood was pretty good today but hardly epic. Some lines off Thunder skied well.

Sucks to hear about the avy incidents.
