I shared a picture on FB taken by Justin Befu of the crown. HUGE is all I can say. The same area slid like that in 05-06 I think.

nacho is not suited for taking pictures, but if i can get him suited up with a helmet cam for of his kamikaze skier take-downs, that would be soooo money.

did he ever answer your question about how much they got?

that slide ran full length down echo bowl. our pit yesterday failed as soon as it was fully isolated on the shit layer on top of the heavy crust. however that spot was 5' down which isnt normally triggered by skiers so things seem to be skiing well as penetration is only a foot or 2. all the storm layers have consolidated. crazy good skiing right now and some lines we backed away from seem to have been safely slayed today.

Looks like I'll be up at KW Sunday afternoon through Saturday. Hoping to do some dawn patrols in the valley or at CP, getting back in time to send the mrs out to lift serve by 10 or so. Also will likely be doing some lift serve laps. Stoked it is staying cold. Stoke y'all have posted up so much good beta. Let me know if anyone wants to join up for short style mini golf tours. Or if anyone wants to watch a 20 month old.

Anyone care to share a pic of the Echo slide?

Took dad for a mellow tour up to Castle today while he's in town. Snow is holding up really good. Tons of people out, whilst on my Benchetlers I was asked "Hey can you show me how that split board goes together" and called an asshole for telling him they were skis as the dude thought I was messing with him apparently. Oi Vey.

I have a pre-owned premium Harness that I am willing to sell if anyone is interested. I taught my kid to ski w it and no other methods. She is in the back-seat a lot, but I figure that's the style now based on all the photos I see of everyone on TGR.

I could start a Castle Peak gaper thread from today. After skiing back down the ridge off the peak proper we took a break on the saddle for dad to adjust boots and what not. Goober comes skinning up from the opposite direction and says "Now that I'm here, how in the hell do I get down?" He followed us to the skin track and then commented about what a boring tour it was...

    KW = Maggot Central?

So KW is going to be crawling with Mogul Marauding Maggots then? (Apt I suppose...)

Cinders & me and a couple of Buses are headed there too on Saturday.
    And to Sierra on Sunday.

    Who's bringing the bubbly?

Also, Further and Deeper are showing tonight at Squaw. Should be fun!
Confirmed. Patrolers said the lift is lower now and they were surprised only one was knocked off.

Silverado is supposed to be opening tomorrow at squaw.

As someone who hasn't spent a great deal of time at VailWood since I'm usually on the north side, where will everyone likely be hanging out at the end of the day? Hope to connect with some of you before then, but at the very least wouldn't mind buying a few beers. (white helmet, charcoal jacket, blue pants, probably riding on Cochise)

anybody want to share a little more info about that slide ^^^? did it really slide on 12/27 - that's what the SAC page says? is that echo peak or talking mountain (sac page says both)? if echo peak, is the peak proper out of view to the left? any indication of the trigger? did the pocket that pulled at the far right of the photo step-down out of view of the photo?

I don't know the details of that slide, but let's just say it isn't an isolated incident. Naturals and massive bomb-triggered slides abound. You should see Granite Peak on Squaw which went (I believe) just yesterday morning. Another 6-7' crown.
    or don't

There's a nice large crown beyond the ropes between Martin Point & the Spur. It's the same tree-less bowl that had a massive crown a couple years back. Access opened up around mid-day but stayed away.

Kirkwood skied well today. Mostly cut up pow and just a grand ol' time doing laps on 6. The dark clouds moved in mid-day so I bailed on any long expedition to thunder saddle etc. Took a lap on 10 and decided the chair was too cold. That cold is definitely keeping the snow in great shape. Some thickness from the sun yesterday and this morning but not bad.

Scary picture. Looks like Baker or something. Remarkable similarities between this, Squaw and Donner one. Its basically a mega version of others.

my questions and curiosity are mainly about whether that layer is calming down for the time being. Yesterday and today (12/27 and 12/28), SAC is predicting that it has calmed down, so it's interesting (to me) if there's been observed natural activity in that layer. also, there's the whole variability and depth of that rain crust in the snowpack as large bowls are ripping (or not ripping) - i'm not really trying to track that, though, unless it is in areas that i regularly ski.

skier666, if you want more details about when that thing ripped out by martin's pt, you or JM should ask AI. i imagine he'd have relevant info

for those that haven't/don't look, SAC had obs today of widespread surface hoar in the donner pass/summit area.

that's echo peak, which is out of view to the right. justin befu kept reporting it as echo/talking mountain despite the fact that they are a ways apart. it's not unusual for it to go like that there and i seriously doubt it went on the 27th. that was just the first time people were able to get a picture of it. and no, what you see of the pocket to the right is all there is.

i would not be surprised to see a similar sized crown coming out the trees that ring the lower bowl on talking mountain. in fact i would be surprised if there is not one.
