Air quality for Tahoe/Reno is rated worse than Beijing's this am.
smoke has been clearing from western nv county (home) in the afternoon, too. we were considering heading to the lakes basin (near the sierra buttes) area for the day to escape the smoke at home today, but the current advisory (below) makes it sound like that's a bad idea. heading to a local swimming hole seems like the best idea. in looking at the smoke models, it looks like the tioga pass area and the crest/east side areas just to the north are relatively smoke free, or the coast....
http://www.myairdistrict.com/index.p.../plumas-countySmoke has been settling downslope in the evening, toward western Nevada County, Auburn and the central valley. Then, during the daytime hours southerly winds have been shifting the main smoke plume northward, spreading residual smoke across the northern Sierras. Inside the plume, smoke concentrations may reach the Hazardous range. With daytime winds forecast to be predominantly out of the south until at least August 25, this pattern is likely to continue. Several popular outdoor recreation areas, including the Grouse Ridge/Bowman Lake area and the Sierra Buttes, are likely to be very smoky when daytime winds are out of the south.
I arrive Wednesday in South Lake, fingers crossed that they get ahold of this thing...vibes +++++
Mt rose pass advertisements are out now.
It not the Super September pass sale of old.
this year 399 but they have restricted passes for less.
the price keeps going up, about 25$ a year.
I dunno, I guess its still a great deal but now that I have gone with a sugar Bowl Pass,
I am thinking i might do with out Mt. rose? that would break 12 years in a row for me.
What do you Mt. rose regulars think? No biggie or puke a little bit
?

Strange lots of Focus on the Rim Fire. But Truckee/ Verdi/ Reno is suffering the smoke from the American fire.
This shit has been off and on for 2 weeks? And the past couple days its been real bad.
now that the RIM fire is blowing up there is not even any news on the american fire, That is making it pretty miserable around here.
Weird how the Smoke Creeps along the West Slope till it hits a pass and then just dumps over into the East Side Valleys

I skipped the Rose pass last year and picked up Mammoth instead. Now with the Mountain Collective benefit offering 50% off Mammoth, I will be skipping the Mammoth pass.
Pretty likely I will pick up the Rose pass at Bobo's sale next weekend. You get a $25 gift card for Bobo's buying a pass there.
If you look at the satellite pics you'll see the smoke from the Rim fire being blown north, right at us. The American fire is hard to see through the Rim fire smoke but is mostly blowing north as well, not at us. Per article in the Bee today Yosemite Valley itself is clear. These fires will be burning until it rains/snows significantly. A westerly or north wind will help some but then we'll be getting smoke from the American, which won't be as bad. You can get news about the rim fire here: http://www.inciweb.org/incident/3660/ and the American fire here:
http://www.inciweb.org/incident/3624/
They seem to have the same number of personnel on the American fire--1600-- as at peak. They aren't reporting the number of engines, bulldozers, and aircraft any more. Perhaps they've pulled some equipment off for the Rim fire--which is expanding a lot faster and is threatening a lot of homes, which the American isn't--also 2 of the 3 hydroelectric plants at Hetch Hetchy are turned off and SF's power lines are threatened.
Edit: Doh. ^^^ Beat me to it.
Actually the vast majority of the smoke in that area is now from the Rim Fire. Check the sat photo Baaahb posted at post #3998 and the two most recent posts here: http://www.tahoeloco.com/weather-geek. The American Fire smoke is drifting father north.
happy birthday lightranger.
the smoke in nv city/grass valley today it's the worst it's been this summer. starting to clear a bit now.
Had a few clear sunny hours at Squaw this afternoon--and heard Dawg for the first time. Back in the smoke at Donner Lake now.

I wonder how many skiers are now buying two separate passes. I wouldn't be surprised if a quarter of Mt Rose passholders -- and 50% of those who can ski midweek -- hold two passes.
Some respite from the smoke this pm in SLT. From the sat photos, the NV valleys are still getting hit hard.
It's not my fault you can't telemark.
If I lived in Reno, and could ski midweek, I'd have a Squalpine Bronze Pass and a Rose Pass.
From my end, I've been thinking of defecting to Sugarbowl because of the Squaw weekend shitshow. Too many friends with Squaw passes though (big surprise). We'll see how I feel after this season. Kind of want to get back into skate skiing too, so the SB-Royal Gorge pass is appealing for that reason as well.
It was very smokey in SLT this morn but in homewood I had a run in clean, cool air this afternoon. I saw smoke south and east of the basin on the drive up here.
Does anyone know what the smoke is like down around Kirkwood? We were going to visit the valley this weekend, but would rather enjoy life on the coast if it is super smokey there.
it's super smoky, i'd stay coastal.
any day the winds are from the S or SW the Sierras north of the Rim fire are smoked out.
this one isn't going to end anytime soon. we've had ash fall on our deck for the last week
"if you plant ice, you're gonna harvest wind..."
Truck is coated w/ ash. Don't even want to go outside and ride/paddle/hike. Work from home job on days like these give me cabin fever.. The dog even has cabin fever
Whither the Start Haus consignment sale?
not counting days 2016-17
So I think I might call today the worst day so far in Verdi. Its BAD! since August 7th the american fire was putting smoke in this Valley but mostly in the Evening around dust.
Today with the wind the viability is already less than 2 miles. ITS BAD! and i can only guess it will get worse? if that possible.
i have the House buttoned up and its still throat burning bad.
I stepped outside and Took a Pic Looking North from my Porch. the Mountains are less than a mile away
I suspect Truckee SW and Reno East are worse?
