Pretty good idea. In my experience, Sugarbowl is one of the better lift-served places in the NLT/Truckee area to still be able to find hidden powder stashes 1-3 days after a storm. Doesn't seem to get tracked out quite as quickly as Squaw or Alpine.

Benson hut area was nice today with a heavy 3 to 5 inches over deep sugar on east facing slopes.

Rose was tits today. The new snow was dense enough to spackle the firm layer but not so dense that it was grippy or sticky. Lapped the chutes all day with Corky. Raccoon Face even put in (an abbreviated) appearance.

Going to hit Rose tomorrow and rotate Squaw and local b/c in there all week long and every day.

time for me to start getting excited... heading out to lake tahoe from the 14th to the 19th. flying in and out of reno, and renting vehicles. an old friend is getting married, and so lots of friends are converging from all over the country for the event. i'm thinking that a wedding celebration, along with st. paddy's day, a reunion of friends and some nice mountains should make for a great trip.

we're staying at alpine meadows, and skiing there at least part of the time but also probably going to try and get over to squaw as well. my only other trip out to tahoe was about the same time of year, and it was all about sunny skies and no fresh snow. the wedding pair will probably be occupied with wedding stuff, so we might not have folks who are familiar with the mountains to show us around. we're all good skiers, and i'm experienced to know that i shouldn't mess around with too much gnar without having somebody who is familiar with things to help out. i'm guessing that we'll be sticking with lift-served. any tips or suggestions?

also, are there any coupons or vouchers that we could find locally to lower the cost of lift tickets? like something at a local supermarket or whatever? any place better or worse to get beers/booze/etc? i'd like to go out and about a bit for some apres-ski boozing, but also probably want to stock up the rental condo and do some self-catering. since it's california, i'm guessing that people will just be freely offering us large amounts of medical-grade marijuana?

thanks for stoking my stoke. in my former life i used to ski all of the time, but it's become a rare event for me these days so i'm slowly working my way up towards giddy.

I am possibly heading up Wed night but it depends on how big this storm is... I am in Meyers though so not sure if that helps you if you're going to Squaw.

thanks... i super appreciate the offer.

but.... it looks like i'm going to try to take the BayAreaSkiBus to alpine on wednesday in stead.

    (mad props to my boss!)

my only concern is that the bus won't make it there due to the storm.

does anybody (maybe TurxSki & Cinders) have any experience riding the BayAreaSkiBus during storms?

this storm looks pretty tame, but the bus heads up at 4:00 am on wednesday.

it looks like that will be the heaviest period of precip....

morning laps above the drain had untracked lines up high...nice to be on the Praxis Ullrs again:

ran into a friend & we just did one lap on cali. super warm by 11 am in the sun...notice his lack of gloves.

but decent snow overall, although NW or W aspects were dust on crust.

Hopefully it will be storming during your stay, if it isn't it is guaranteed to be sunny and warm-ish.

    Plan on cooking.

Decent to good places to check out food wise around you:

-Front Street Pizza (no place to sit, so order to go, or get lucky)
-Sunnyside on Tuesdays for $10 beer and burger, or Taco Wednesdays
-Fire Sign Cafe (west shore-ish as well as Sunnyside) for breakfast/brunch
-The Crest for cheap beer and food, along with River Ranch at base of AM road.

REI might have some discount tickets?

Drop me a PM and I'd be happy to show you guys around Alpine one day. That late in the year pass holders might have a few $50 and $75 a day discount tickets for "friends and family" I think all mine will be gone though.

Folks might not share their fancy weed, but you'll get to hear lots about how much weed they smoke, how they grow the best weed in the world, have the best weed ever...oh and did they mention they smoke more than you?

+1 for the Crest Cafe. it's run by good people and thursday night sushi rocks!

(and it's one of your closest options)

but... please don't refer to the middle of march as "late in the year"!!!

Rose was OK today. Not bad but nothing to jump up and down about.

    Bonus!

    Bonus Snowday!
It snowed pretty much all day at KW yesterday. Unexpected! Not many peeps around at all.
Skied deep enough to make a difference too - actually had trouble finding the Champers I'd buried in the am, when I went to get it at the end of the day (wedding aniv).
Didn't get off 6 all day (didn't fancy the misty whiteout up top of 10).

They will try & make it, but they usually divert to NoStars (Sierra in the South) if it's a bad storm.
Depends how much is closed at the "target" resort, and how long to get there.
If they divert, and you're a SV passholder, they will hook you up with a cheapish tick.

Hey, they are hurting for Hosts from the South Bay, in case you fancy the gig (free skiing, lunch money, jacket)?
Cinders & me are on that bus too, but we have to board in Walnut Creek, as they dropped the Oak p/u. I'll pm you digits.

    FKNA!

    Skittle Crew comin' after you!

    Now we're talking!

Young Owen will be psyched to have you guys there.

Edit for thanks to Sinecure for offer of two vouchers. Those will help keep this trip affordable for us.
