BTW, if the roads are snowy tomorrow night I presume coming over 1-80 to 89 is my best bet? Last year we took the mt rose highway as we were spending the first night at the venerable Biltmore. Not this time, and I'm presuming that route can be more sketchy in bad weather.....

80 closes far more often than 431

    I take it that's a local's recommendation to take 431?

80 closing EAST of 89? How often does that happen? Take 80 from Reno. I don't think this storm is likely to totally shut down 80 over Donner and cause a backup from Verdi through Truckee.

431 is white knuckle driving in a storm, and just seems like unnecessary vertical and curves. Am I missing something here?

Last year you could have taken 267 through Brockway and that would have been way easier, though a bit more trafficked, than going over 431.

I haven't hit that in a few years and I didn't know if I should hope for it to be there on Friday.
It can re-form in a really big storm of 3'+ with high winds. This little dusting certainly isn't going to do it.

Fun fresh tracks at KW today. Bumped in to longshortlong and found some fun turns. Dumping now. Refueling and preparing to hike for more fresh.

Looks unlikely for 80 to close but it's not just how much snow falls but how many wrecks there are--it only takes an inch. In the past traffic from reno has sometimes been held at the state line when 80 over donner summit is closed--they let people through who can prove they are not going over the summit--like a truckee/tahoe utility bill. I haven't personally run into that situation and I don't know if they still do it. (One year the trucks who were stopped deliberately blocked both lanes to keep locals from getting through.) I'm taking my gas bill with me when I go pick up my wife in Reno tonight.

Wish they would hold 89 traffic in north tahoe and the 89 and 267 ski areas when 80 is closed, especially on weekends, except for truckee and reno bound traffic. Better to be stuck with foot, heat, and toilets then gridlocked on 89 or in truckee. My personal record, on a sunday afternoon, was 5 hours squaw to donner lake.

It was coming down hard at Squaw today. And after noon or so pretty much impossible to see (or feel your face) so tomorrow should be pretty good. Found quite a few bottomless turns on my last few runs in some wind blown areas.

Woke up to a dusting, did some work and then headed our around noon. Did a short skin to try out new setup and get some exercise. Then went to Alpine for a few hours of turns late afternoon. Found some fun spots. Last run I took over around gentians had some great turns, including a few face shots in wind loaded spots. I even let out a few hoots and hollers cause it felt so damn good to make a few semi-bottomless turns.

Tomorrow should be good. Anyone headed to Alpine let me know we can meet up. Have guests in all weekend, hoping to do some touring next week.

Squaw was getting dumped on today. Had some nice hidden freshies up top at Granite and Shirley in the trees.
Not much fallling on Rose on my way to and from Squaw.

RE ROADS: 80 closes because of drivers' incredible desire to spin out and go wheeeeeeeeeee.

Granite was surprisingly good today, especially skier's left from the top. And there were all of 30 people lapping that chair.

Jables - I'll be at AM tomorrow. White helmet, charcoal jacket, blue pants - on Rocker2 115's if I'm feeling optimistic.

Drove into south lake tonight and it didn't even look like it snowed here.

^ Was getting ready to head up to HV until my buddy calls to say we only a dusting at our condo next to Stagecoach today. I agree, WTF.

Did anybody get any real snow today? I can't find a site that gives me daytime snow accumulations anywhere.

^ Read it all, but to say it's dumping doesn't tell the whole story... I was looking for daytime accumulations.

I also posted to substantiate snuttypants report to maybe save somebody a trip, or divert them elsewhere.

It looks like KW updated their site to say they got 4 to 5 inches by 2:30 pm, but don't know if that is correct.

Maggie's was fun and private today. Found the areas where faceting made the crust softer, which was also where 4-6" was filling in. Wish I could ski tomorrow but I'm getting my hair cut.

Hey so I have been trying to figure this out -- the Kwood website says it provides real time snow data a la kicking horse mountain resort -- though it doesn't seem to be real time (unless the snow shut off about 4 hours ago). Does anyone know what the deal is regarding that? I was thinking of pulling a cough cough *sick day* but 6-8 inches probably doesn't seem quite worth it (though I wish it did).

I don't know about real time or how to properly measure snow. There is a little bit. Enough to fill in some areas. It is quite fun to ski, but far from epic. I would not give up my once or twice a season sick day to come rushing up here, but on the other hand, I am sure it will be fun tomorrow.

Too bad KW has decided to rope off the competition area for next week. That is some of the best terrain on the hill to be closed for a week prior to the event. Boo.

Thanks Ottime - that is what I am trying to figure out -- is it worth calling in or is this the no significant snow for 6 weeks kicking in? I am trying to gauge if the models have another 12 inches coming down tonight or if it blew through fast and it shut right off. Soooo for the FWT did they rope off only the cirque or also the saddle and off the t-bar?

Pretty sad when there was more snow at 3000 feet than in my driveway at 6500 feet in south lake county, watched that storm bust up at the crest all day, hope we get a little wrap around moisture over night

or you could just stay west of the crest, and out of bounds.

in a few, i'll have a video of the conditions west of the crest and in the backcountry, which is where things are good right now. the resorts near the crest (not heavenly) got the same snow, but have a very firm base underneath.
