    Boot modification ideas

Yea, yea yea... Tech Talk. There's 119 people viewing this forum and 8 viewing Tech Talk. I need answers. You do the math.

    Anywho...
I've been out thrice this season since getting the OK from the ortho. Twice on the board and once on skis.

I was convinced there was some hidden torture device in my left snowboard boot that I just couldn't find that was pressing on my left ankle and making me whine like a teenage girl after a few hours of riding. I skied the third time out, only to discover that those boots also caused the whinage.

Turns out that one of the screw-heads in my ankle protrudes just enough to get pressed on by the boots. After a few hours of the pressing, I start the whining. It sucks.

I'm considering some ghetto fixes like a hunk of padding in my sock over the screw head or notching out that section of my boots.

Is there a better way to go?? The people I ski/ride with are tired of the whining and want answers, now.

Donut dude, same concept an bunion pad. Pap around the screw so the screw has space. Either make a permenant mod to the boot or try taping a bad on your foot.

Had a similar issue on my pinky toe - a screw was agitating it to no end. Took it to a shop and they filed it down. Did the trick.

Foggy... hadn't thought of the bunion pad. Could work if it's strong enough.

road... ouch. The screw's in my ankle. I'm not letting any shop tech file it down.

foggy has the idea. Cut a donut from 1/8 or 1/4 inch adhesive felt. Put the hole around the screw head to relieve the pressure. They do make pre-cut ones that you just peel and stick.

i don't know where in colorado you live, but if you're in the boulder area talk to larry the boot fitter. he's got a small shop in town and the man seems to know his stuff. He can do anything from $70 custom insoles to all sorts of smaller work for much cheaper.

The donut can be fine but keep in mind your ankle articulates forward and down. That means a donut may need to take that shape. The last thing you want is flexing and the screw hitting the edge of the pad and concentrating the pressure in one spot and hit. Punching out the shell may be necessary in the end and can be pulled back in with heat if and when the screw ever gets removed.

Barring that going to a good shop and having them file it down could be fun. Can I watch?

if your ankle is pronating inwards as you flex forward a foot bed with more support might be the answer. That way you move the foot away from the side of the boot rather then moving the boot away from the foot (punch)

www.itsyoursole.com (I think) is a great one $50 CAD retail.

If you do grind the screw let me know too.

lots of great ideas . I'm going to REI tomorrow for the footbeds. If that doesn't work, I'll be visiting Larry.
Thanks to all for the ideas!

    1. REI has the beds that mntlion recommended.
    2. mntlion knows his shit.
    3. If it doesn't fix it, no harm, no foul. The insoles will work in any shoes/boots I have.
    4. I won't be in Boulder any time soon.
    5. I'll be right next door to the REI store.
    6. I want to.

F247... Thanks. Seems as though Larry must know half the board. I'm probably going to need new ski boots next season. Larry will likely be the guy I buy them from.

Why didn't they countersink the screw head? Go see Norm at the New Yankee Workshop...

Or grind the screw head down with a Dremel.

Counter sinking, there's an idea. Find a good shop (maybe Larry) get him to pull the screw, countersink and reinstall it, then for good measure dremel the head down. Be sure to drink yourself into a coma first and again I'd like to watch. Maybe get him to boil the dremel burrs and the drill bit as well.
