The Magic Lantern for Canon Thread

A few disparate threads (below) on Magic Lantern, so I thought I'd start something more cohesive.

    Magic Lantern experience in general?

    Reviews?

Just figured this would be a good catch all thread for Magic Lantern discussion.

    HD Video on the 50D

Thinking about going the ML route on my 50D as they now have 1080/30fps HD video (no sound) enabled through ML for the 50D.

Anyone have experience with ML on the 50D?

Try it, see if you like it. You're not actually installing anything on your camera so it can be undone if you don't like it.

Yup. Working on that right now.

"Canon 50D was NOT designed to record movies. Keep in mind:

This feature was not thoroughly tested and may be unstable.
Always disable movie recording when you don't use it.
Battery will drain quickly when recording; also, the camera may overheat.

    Limitations:

The camera will not record sound. You can use an external recorder (for example, Zoom H1, H2 or H4n) and sync the sound in post with a clapperboard.
You can't play back movies in the camera.

This setting remains active even if you start the camera with standard firmware (until you clear your settings). "

Thanks for the info. I also read the same on another review.

My biggest concern is the potential overheating; I'm definitely going to keep an eye on that. Likely using this as an alternate angle cam to my 7D for winter TR vids.

Trying to finally put together a vid project that I've had in mind for a few years now. I was originally going to swap my 20D for a t2i or 60D, but Canon Loyalty Program has yet to hit the Great White North. I figured this is a free solution...as long as I don't fry my 50D.

Just installed ML and shot some short (1:30 min) videos (.MOV) and played with a few of the other ML settings on my 50D.

Works well so far. Initial thoughts: stoked.

I'll provide an update as I get time to use it more.

I've been running Magic Lantern on my t2i for a while now, a little over a year maybe. It's pretty amazing what it enables the camera to do. I mostly wanted it for the audio functions; using external mics with no agc, on screen vu meter as well as allowing me to use headphones etc. It's not my first choice to use that camera for recording sound but it works good enough when I need it.

Other functions I use a bunch are focus assist, the intervalometer, crop marks, custom wb temps, and added ISO's. I've run into overheating issues a few times but nothing major, just pop the batteries out for a minute or two and it cools off enough to resume. I put a battery grip on which seems to help quite a bit with the heat issues. The version I've been running since about January has been nice and stable and provides me with so much that I haven't bothered updating.

I know you're on a different camera but I'm sure you're gonna dig it.
