    farking apple....

i ordered my mac mini from apple on the 23rd of january, and this "Shipping: on or before 2/22/2005" thing has been killing me for the past 2 weeks. my old Dell is seriously on it's last leg (the IDE cables keep physically disconnecting from my harddrives, the PS/2 port for my keyboard is loose.... ARRRGGG) and i'm seriously gonna commit homicide if i don't see a "Shipped: Expected delivery..." soon.

on another note - i have all of my data currently on this computer (the dell). would i be able to switch all the hard drives to a new box (i have an old celeron 500 system laying around) as slave drives, put in a small master for another copy of XP, then physically connect the 2 computers (the apple and the celeron box using a CAT5 cable) and use the network drives? saves me from having to transfer all my data or getting firewire enclosures for all my hard drives. the windows machine wouldn't be used for anything other than as a backup - it's only real purpose will be for storage. ¿es posible?

firewire enclosures are cheap and would work very well with your mac mini.

    consider it as an option.

You would need a "cross-over" cat 5 cable but it would work. Firewire or USB 2.0 enclosure is a much better way to go.

yeah, i'd have to get a firewire hub since the mini only has one firewire port. i have plenty of cat5, so i'll try that out first and see how it works out.

now if it would just ship.....

Did you doctor yours up or order it w/one of the standard configurations?

I heard the standards have been shipping for a while, but anything with custom elements is delayed.

Also, if you ordered custom stuff, look again now and make sure it hasn't dropped in price. They did that a couple weeks back, and if you complain they'll refund you the difference.

i got the 1.42 with 512ram (this should be the base amount of ram - 256 is enough to run maybe 2 programs at a time), bluetooth and airport, combo drive, wireless keyboard and mouse.

and yeah, they dropped the prices about 3 days after i put my order in - sent me an email notifying me that my order would reflect the new prices.

welcome to apple. You probably have another month of waiting. they plan poorly so there will be rushes for their products.

Doesn't seem to be hurting their revenue much. Maybe the planning isn't so poor, really.

Like Lurch said you need a CROSSOVER cable, not a normal chunk of cat5.

Unless you have connectors and a splicing tool then you're SOL with normal cat5 (unless you feel like splicing a cable at the midpoint.)

    1 & 3 along with 2 & 6 are swapped at one end.

Normal cat5 = no boom boom (unless you have a switch or hub).
