Haven't read the book (yet), but I'm halfway through season 1 of Tokyo Vice on HBO, and so far it's been pretty amazing. The story, characters, acting - all great! The 10 episode season 2 is just unspooling now, so my late-to-the-party bingeing will continue nicely.
There are tons of vids with author Jake Adelstein on YouTube, but this one is relatively short, and interesting...
If nothing else I think the last "lesson" might resonate with many around these parts.
The past is a foreign country; they do things differently there.
That was an entertaining talk
Brandine: Now Cletus, if I catch you with pig lipstick on your collar one more time you ain't gonna be allowed to sleep in the barn no more!
Cletus: Duly noted.
Didn't realize the show was based (loosely) on his experiences. Explains why I think the character Jake Adelstein is such a douche.

I went to Japan with my ex who had lived there and she was adamant I keep my tattoos covered as folks would think I was Yakuza. Our friends born and raised there thought it was hilarious that she thought some honky gaijin could get mistaken for them.
First week in Japan on my study abroad program, I stopped in to a tiny yakitori restaurant (bar seating only, maybe 8 seats) with two American classmates. There was a yakuza and his moll there when we arrived, and not knowing any better, we sat down more or less next to them, because that was the only option. He was classic yakuza, permed hair, sunglasses, rough Japanese.
Fortunately for us, he decided we were incredibly interesting and asked us a million questions about what we were doing in Japan and why we were studying Japanese and so on. He took a shine to us pretty quickly and started buying all our food and drinks. I think he was ready for us to get into an all night drinking session, but we made our excuses after about half an hour. I was sweating bullets the whole time, because I spoke exactly enough Japanese to accidentally offend someone. It was a memorable introduction to Japan.
I read recently that a yakuza don was sentenced to death for crimes committed by his underlings, a hugely unprecedented development.

Two episodes in to season 2 of Tokyo Vice, and it doesn't disappoint! High level is being sustained - not always the case with streaming series.
Caught this interview with Jake Adelstein from 2009 on a drive last week. Pretty good listen.

Snapt = definitely a Tokyo gangster. I've met him and it was my first thought.

"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring."
Such a great show, and it was tee'd up to continue a great storyline! Hopefully it'll rise from the ashes on another streaming service.
