    x2....

I am leaving for Mammoth this afternoon but will be back on Saturday, so next Thursday the 25th lets do San-O for sure. Lets coordinate next week but everyone should join us for gapetastic night of getting in peoples way and flailing.

    thread jack:
Going to climb Half-Dome tomorrow and I am pretty nervous (not a climber & afraid of heights), is there anything I need to know....?

I'm so gapetastic, would love to join. You mean San Onofre State Beach, like an hour from San Diego? Not sure I can come, getting a work schedule soon I hope, but would def like to meet up. What time do you guys show up at the water? It's probably some brutal commuter traffic to get there...

Yes, good spot for all abilities (especially beginners), there is ZERO attitude and it’s a decent LB wave. You expect people to get in your way and you are expected to just smile and move on.

Pretty sure j-tran comes up from the SD area and doesn’t seem to hit heavy traffic, but he will have to confirm that. We usually jump in the water around 6pm and surf for a couple hours, then IPA & grub time around the fire. It’s super fun and we all pretty much suck at surfing so it’s all good.

    1. That's funny cause you climb some serious stuff this winter, and

    2. Don't look down, and

    3. Save the IPAs for after

    Have fun

shera, I drive up from Carlsbad at 5/5:30ish, so I don't have any of the SD post-work traffic really. If you can make it happen and get up to north county I can give you a ride from there (as long as your board isn't much longer than 9').

    Wait, wait, wait.

How is it a longboard if it is not much bigger than 9'. You kids these days. And by "kids", I guess I mean kooks.

In my day we only started to call it a longboard at 9'6". Anything shorter was a whipper snapper fandengo thingy. Geez. The things MTV and Twitter has done to this country.

BTW, my longboard is a 9'3" and shaped in 1963, so I guess I am full of shit again.

Carry on. And ya SheRa, you should hook up the San O deal.

I guess technically I don't have a longboard in my quiver, unless I count my wife's board. 8'0" is the longest board I've surfed in years. Don't judge, I'm short

Ok, sounds good. Hopefully I'll know pretty soon if I can come. Would like to show off a shiny new turtle roll. Bruising myself up trying anyway.

The shop said my board was 9'2", but I haven't measured it. It's got a single long fin. Please feel free to ooh and aah like I still do every time I see it. Repeat posted to get some attention!!!

I like the looks of it SheRa. I really like the color. Not that that matters. Although I was once told sharks like to bite yellow boards.

Don't know if it is true, but years ago I was told that wrapping your leash like you have it cause the material to wear unevenly where the leash bends around the board and develops spots where it is weaker and more likely to break. Kind of made sense to me. Since then I only wrap the leash when necessary (like racking on a car) to avoid weakening the leash. Thought I'd share that. In fact, when I'm not using a leash, I hang them straight in my garage. Especially for my big wave leashes that are more likely to snap anyway.

On another note, my two year old caught his first boogie board wave today along the Rhode Island coast. All on his own. Sure it was only a four inch high wave, but he killed it and all the way to the beach

I suppose that could happen, but unless it's stud wave land I've seen more leashes fail at the swivel or the stiching, not the cord itself.

That little grom is gonna be your best surf buddy in just a few years. And ski buddy.

I'll wrap the leash looser, thanks for pointing it out. It will put kinks in it the way I'm doing.

Isn't there any rule in surf club, like "there's no talking about sharks in surf club!"?

Turtle roll is seriously kicking my ass, never learned in the shallow water with a soft top. I watched the surf simply vid three times now and still just having troubles.

TGR never fails. Thanks for the quick invite guys.

I'm bummed though, Thursday night is the only night of the week I have set plans through October (hoops league). I'll definitely PM you guys though my contact info. Choosing between Bolsa Chica and San-O for tomorrow early morning. Will report back how the flailing went and hopefully catch up with you at some point.

shera, try to grab further up on the board towards the nose when you roll, then just dangle vertically under the board while the whitewater passes by. Probably goes without saying, but I roll back the same way I rolled in (i.e. I always roll right, then flip my board back over away from me (to the left)).

Also, the more whitewater you're turtleing the harder grip on the board you need to take. It helps to be paddling at the wave so you have some momentum as well.

Ok, thanks. The vertical dangling is not intuitive at all. One weird thing, on the surf simply vid, the guy says to grab the board back, like w chicken wings, so when you pop back on you will be in the right position for paddling immediately. That is my biggest problem, getting back on the board quick and clean. I am sucking at using the buoyancy of the board, such a cute efficient trick - I really want to be able to do it.

Here's the link to the vids (somebody else posted it already too) - http://www.surfsimply.com/podcast/

Turtling is in the "paddling out" vid starting just after 6:00

something that's worked for me on longboards so long as the surf isn't big, but big enough to be tough to get through is i'll sit up on the board with my back to the incoming whitewater and once it's about to hit me i lean back HARD while pulling the board by the rails with me/towards me. works pretty well then i just spin around while still seated, pop down and start paddling out again.

A few comments. I am pretty sure a legal comp longboard is 9'0" and longer or 3 feet+ taller than a shorty.

To bad you guys are going all the way to San O, as I live way south in Coronado and just hate doing that drive in the evening traffic.

It would be fun to meet up South of O side (Terramar) some morning. I normally surf Swami's on Friday mornings if somewhere in that area works for the Maggots.
Never in U.S. history has the public chosen leadership this malevolent. The moral clarity of their decision is crystalline, particularly knowing how Trump will regard his slim margin as a “mandate” to do his worst. We’ve learned something about America that we didn’t know, or perhaps didn’t believe, and it’ll forever color our individual judgments of who and what we are.

I feel the same way - I just checked out the drive and it's too much for me. Fighting traffic out of town, then drinking and then driving home late is tough. I love the idea, just wish it was closer. If we're doing requests, I vote for meeting at Sunset Cliffs.

I love surfing at the Cliffs, but normally only go over there if I know a pretty good swell is in the water as it takes more to get that spot breaking well. Definitely a winter spot.

I would try out Terramar sometime.

Woohooo, I paddled out again today! Proud of myself cause I think I've got a habit now. Went by Sunset Cliff first and the tide was way out, at least 100 feet of grass covered rocks. The water was really flat and there were already 5 people on the tiny outside break. I want to go in there again when I can surf one of the two inside breaks and stay out of the way.

Anyway, I drove on up to Tourmaline and went out in the water like I knew what I was doing. Got outside without even getting my hair wet. Then just drifted towards the mob in front of the pumphouse. Caught a couple at the edge of the crowd and headed home. Easy sleazy. There was one guy forward and inside of me that kept turning around and paddling for every swell and pulling back and never riding a wave, kind of annoying, so I finally just blew him off and went whenever I wanted to go. Whole lot of beginners in the water there.

I can really feel my arms right now, so that's good.

Question - why do people rinse off their surfboards?
