Oh, can you see the rest of my profile? Not that I particularly care, I've put my real name up a bunch of times.

Swans are definitely well made and well found, but I've never liked their lack of sheer....and I'm not really a fan of their light colored wood, Ikea-style interiors.

Some friends of our family traded up for a Swan 57 ketch from a smaller Mason, and I helped deliver it from Chicago to where they lived in Michigan. It was a heavily built, and well balanced boat, with no tenderness at the wheel...but even though she was penned by Sparkman & Stephens, I still preferred the better tracking a long full-keel, over her modified keel.

Their new boats I don't like...they seem to be focusing on huge, dual wheel, multi-spreader sleds...and that's not my cuppa.

If I had a cool 1 mil plus to spend on a boat, I'd spend it on one of these:

Cherubini 44 ketch....full keel, impeccably designed, famously well-built. Expensive and worth it.

But when it comes to sailboats, I'm a traditionalist. I prefer a beautiful sheerline, substantial bulwarks (maybe large enough for built-in scuppers), capped by a nice teak toe-rail, all of which I have on my own ketch. Hell, I've got ratlines up the shrouds on my own boat, and wouldn't mind a set of baggy-wrinkles. And there is nothing better than standing on the bow sprit, holding onto the forestay, as she drives to in a good beam reach.

Swans and the even more expensive and more sought after Oysters, just don't do much for me. But ANY sailboat still paints a better picture upon the sea than some smelly oil burner powerboat. (certain powerboats such as HackerCraft and Hinckley Picnic Boats excepted!!)

Blew a head gasket on my diesel and waiting on parts (((( , but I'll get out sailing today even if I have to stitch a few shirts together and fly them from my kayak :P

I have no idea what "Sailing Anarchy" is. Fill me in.

I didn't have any luck at all with NBC Online....every time I went to the main page, I was confronted with a static page of cable company icons and it wouldnt allow me past that, eevn when I tried a proxy.

if i had the cash for a real sailboat, it would be one of these:

Something about the wrinkle in your forehead tells me there's a fit about to get thrown
And I never hear a single word you say when you tell me not to have my fun
It's the same old shit that I ain't gonna take off anyone.
and I never had a shortage of people tryin' to warn me about the dangers I pose to myself.

catamaran/monohull is the ski/snowboard debate of sailing...

That's no ordinary plastic cat...she's a Wharram. I've met two different voyaging families on Wharram cats (each voyaging with little kids....one now on their way to the coast of Argentina).

Wharram owners are some of the most colorful people I've ever met.

And unlike the cookie-cutter catamarans you see most often, Wharrams are the most affordible cat out there. Instead of paying between $350, 000 to 1.5 million for a regular fiberglass cat....Wharrams can often be had on the used market for as low as $30, 000 for a 40 footer. I've seen them even less.

I'm growing more fond of cats. I used to sail small Hobie 18's as a kid, but I'm talking about the big cats. Cats are fast....easily 5 knots faster and more, than a same size monohull....stable....make a PERFECT livaboard, 'cause the kids can live in one hull while the parents live in the other....sharing the main cabin/galley.

But if you're unlucky and you end up in 70 ft seas off the coast of west africa....cats will turn turtle on you and STAY capsized, and you'll have absolutely no hope of righting them. Eventually, they often break apart.

In heavy weather, offshore big-sea conditions, I feel safer in a full-keel monohull. But many many Wharram cats have done multiple circumnavigations with no problems. "Ye takes yer chances, lads, when ye leave the comforts of port and head for the distant horizon. But it's them chances that make a life."

    Here's some more Wharrams:

    Wharram Tahiti 50

    Wharram Tiki 46

Unlike a monohull, You can easily dry out a cat in the tidal flats for maintenance, camping, etc, picnics, and refloat upon the next tide.

Will take all different rigs, from ancient traditional to full-batten modern.

And come in all different sizes.

And cut a pretty picture wherever they are.

Even if they don't capsize you're in for a horrible rolley ride in any sizeable ocean swell.

Has anyone tried one of these Hobie Island series? I remember a few years ago a bunch of surfers took them down the coast. I think it was called "transparent sea" and Dave Rastavich was on the trip. But they look like they move pretty fast! Price tag is a little steep at $5k.

Pretty sure those are the ones they rent here at Rendexvous Sports. You should come out and take one out on Jackson Lake!

    It's easy to grin
    When your ship comes in
And you've got the stock market beat.
    But the man worthwhile,
Is the man who can smile,
When his shorts are too tight in the seat.

Those Hobie trimarans are pretty fast. They're not outrageously fast...they need a little more sail area for that. But they're fun. I still prefer the Hobie cats over the tri...as it's just such a blast getting high up on one pontoon on a Hobie cat!!! (even though heeling over like that is not a very efficient way to say, but it sure is fun!)

If you wanna check out outrageously priced....check out the price of a brand new AMF Alcort Sunfish (or Vanguard...I guess the company is now)...the damn things are now over $4000 !!!

Why anyone would pay over $4000 for a new Sunfish when used Sunfishs can easily be had for a couple hundred bucks. I'd rather get a faster 505 anyway...at least there you can get out on the trapeze. A new 505 will run you over $15,000 and a new 420 maybe a few grand less...still outrageous!!

For whatever reason, the price of new sailing dinghies has gone through the roof....thankfully tons of used ones on the market keeps the used ones really affordable.

I was out on the 70-foot schooner Fame today. A replica of the famous privateer from the War of 1812. It was a fun 2 hour tour.
