04 Turner DHR blown shock... replacement?

04 Turner DHR with a blown Romic. What should I replace it with?

Image for reference of limited space:

Also, I am starting to wonder what do modern, 2010, 2011, 2012 DH frames offer over the 04 DHR?

That frame is still one of the best. I'd probably just drill the "mod" hole to lower/slacken it. Throw a Vivid on it or similar call it good. Those things rock.

    a vivid resi won't fit.

summit, what you want is an avalanche montie shock:

    http://avalanchedownhillracing.com/monotube.html

it will fit in there perfectly, will ride incredibly well, and be ultra durable.

simply put, there is nothing wrong with that DHR. it will ride rad. stick some offset bushings in the shock so you don't have to screw with drilling it, to lower and slacken it, and shred it for a few more years. rad bike. other than a 1/2 pound of frame weight, it is as good as anything, really.

    Forgot about the resi problem.

Avalanche has a few other offerings that'll work too.

Other option: Try calling Darren at PUSH. He did an extensive amount of work with that frame back in the day and might have an old project shock laying around he could sell you. (he built a bunch of shocks for the Honda/Turner team that year)

nice whip summit! I had an 02. worst bike move I ever made selling that thing.

I wouldn't spend much cash trying to rebuild that romic. Would a cheapy DHX on ebay w/res fit?

The res is not gonna fit. I've heard of switching the external res to flexible tubing and mounting it to the frame... but that will cost $ too.

I think the Romic rebuild is like $140

Anyone have experience with the remote res trick?

how about a fox vanilla? no res, I'm pretty sure people used to run those on this frame. I also had one way back when, loved that bike.

Dude, buy the damn avalanche for $399 and shred that thing hard for the next decade. The avalanche shocks are easily the nicest on market for dh bikes anyhow...

Nice ride. I'm on the same frame and still love it. Thought about upgrading and demo'd a few new bikes lately and didn't think they had much more if any to offer over my DHR. I'm probably just going to ride it till it dies.

    BIKE IS DONE!

    Rebuilt Romic
Fork serviced and sealed, 2 new stanchions stanchions, New dampers

DirtLabs was ON TOP of it. Mike and his people have the true expertise and outstanding quality service. I am very stoked... cannot wait to ride!

Marshal, where can I get the offset bushings?

    Good call! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Offset-Shock...ht_1673wt_1392

So other than slackening the HT and lower the BB, any other effect on rear suspension travel/behavior?

You could also see if dirtlabs can shorten the stroke of the shock a little bit to get the same effect, like a mini version of "short shocking" a bike. Anyway, that frame rips real hard. My friend had one and sold it to get a revolt. That dhr was really fun to ride! Check out the VP varial angle headset. The "gimbal" necessary for an angle-slackening headset is built into the bearing, and mine is slop-free. If the headset is making noise, it isn't more than chainslap and an open bath marzocchi fork, so I don't notice. I've been having good luck with mine on my Sunday. Slack that bike out 1.5 degrees, drop in the offset bushings to drop the bb a tad, and have a bike that will go toe to toe with any of the new releases on the market.

Bikes like that DHR and my Sunday really get you thinking about how the industry force feeds consumers technology upgrades. My sunday is a 2005, and with a VP headset in full slack, and a DHX rc4 out back, it has the same geometry as a "modern" race bike, kills it everywhere, and costs a fraction of the price.

Shit... there's some oil around the Romic rebound knob after only 5 days of riding and it feels funky, like it is harder to catch air and it sometimes rides rough... hard to describe. Ideas? I'll call Dirtlabs on Monday but I don't really want to lose my bike again... but I don't want to drop $400+ on a new shock.

Drilling vs short shocking vs bushings? I'm leaning toward the bushings as that seems the easiest followed by drilling.

I've been 110% happy with my avalanche products. Unlike other guys out there craig builds his shocks to be modular all around...so if you want the same shock revalved for a differed bike, or setup with a different stroke, he can tweak the shock you have instead of getting a new one.
