    Chainrings

I need new chainrings for the MTB. Well, maybe just the big one. How much do these suckes run and can I buy just the big ring?

I would guess about $40 to as much as you want to spend on a big ring, and yes, you can buy just a big ring, but its better to change a whole drivechain at the same time if its worn as you could end up with gears skipping when matching old with new.

I personally get minimal use out of my big ring. Not to mention the fact that it gets all the abuse. My suggestion would be to go to your LBS and see if they've got a used one lying around, and if not, get the cheapest one you can find. I personally wouldn't spend a lot of money unless it's a really nice crankset.
Remind me. We'll send him a red cap and a Speedo.

i now use my big ring as a bashgaurd and chain ring. there are just stubs for teeth left, but for moving fast and smooth it works.

Or just grind the teeth off your worn-out big ring and have one for free.

I kinda like the extra clearance I get from a bashguard. The other thing is if your big ring takes a serious shot it's much more likely to bend and be in the way of the chain running smoothly on the middle ring than a good FSA or Salsa bashguard.

I guess I should provide some more info...

I have 1 bike, so it gets used for everything from commuting to trail rides. I f'd up the teeth on the big ring by not quite making it up onto a brick ledge thingy awhile back. Now it's slowing me down on the flats to work. I spend a lot of time in the big ring.

I'm a college kid so something cheap is fine. The rest of the drive train is in decent shape, I think.

assgasorgrass - I'll look and get back to you.
