I didn't see any mention of fructose intake in here. Do you drink a lot of soda, other sugary drinks, or eat a lot of sugar in general? Excessive fructose intake can cause fatty liver disease in teetotalers. Cut out all soda and sweetened beverages, and minimize consumption of sweets in general and even high-fructose fruits and honey. Definitely no agave nectar if you use that (80+% fructose).

Absolutely no soda. Maybe 10 cans of pop a year. I mostly drink three things: Beer, Water, Skim milk.

I do like treats and chocolate, but I'm not eating bowls of it daily.

As for diverticulitis, we just went through this the MIL. She ended up having to have major surgery due to blockages. She spent the past 4 months with an ostomy bag and just had surgery to restore her colon. As for diet the main thing now is eating a high fiber diet. The nuts and seeds seems to be an old wife's tale. Her docs have assured her as long as she eats plenty of fiber she doesn't have to avoid any foods. She does still need to lose close to a 100 pounds though. I think excess weight may play a role in diverticulitis, or the excess weight is a reflection of a bad diet that can lead to diverticulitis.

    Good luck.

Well that's good. Bad news is that it's definitely the beer/beer gut then.

How do you gain 8 lbs overnight? Its not like your body can just magically create mass.

Retaining water, swelling, shut down of stomach due to.... - I have no clue. It has happened a few times so it's not quite so shocking now. None of this shit makes any sense to me.

She uses muscle testing which I didn't believe in it all being the skeptical more analytical thought guy that I am.

She says do this, don't do that. I think I am humoring her...and next thing I know I am off pain meds and feeling better than I have felt in three or four years. Not going to fuck with that. Just thankful. I did misspeak when I said overnight. That would be in a 24 hour period since I only weigh in the morning.

All things in moderation, including moderation.

Eat sensibly, excersie regularly and most of these problems will go away. There is virtually no food that is unhealthy in and of itself. But too much of just about any food will lead to bad things. Cut down on the beer, especially the weekenders, but enjoy the ones you drink.

We all need the rare binge, be it ice cream or alcohol. Keep it rare, enjoy it when you do it, and don't feel guilty about it. Stress is worse then bad diet.

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

Lots of beers have sugar added for flavoring. Not sure about your particular poison.

And on another note, is everyone on TGR a fatass?

The high fiber diet as a prevention or treatment for diverticulitis is a myth too. As with a lot of bullshit in medicine its perpetrated by docs that heard it in medical school or from some mentor. The excess weight is spot on though.

What? Name one. Some beers use sugar in the wort as an adjunct, but I can't think of any that use sugar as post-fermentation "flavoring."

If I didn't take fiber, I would be shitting steel wool.

"Some of the cheapest American lagers, malt liquors, and cream ales contain a large amount of corn syrup (up to 40% of their fermentables), but if you are the sort of person worried about consuming refined sugars I am guessing you don't drink a lot of cheap beer (I'm talking even cheaper than Bud/Miller/Coors which each contain corn or rice)."

    http://myyearwithout.blogspot.com/20...n-my-beer.html

The suggestion is that it comes through the fermentation process (unconsumed by the yeast). Granted, this is cheap beer and the OP indicated that he drinks custom brews. However, I'd bet $100 that sugar is used as a flavorant post-fermentation in a wide variety of beers. Where do you think beers like Blue Moon and Sam Adams get the sweetness from? There are no requirements to list ingredients and everyone knows that sweet things sell. I'd bet cash that the wine industry does the same thing. Shit, they add things like artificial oak flavoring, so why not impart a little more control on sweetness by adjusting with refined sugars right before it goes on the shelf?

You'd hope it would be unfermented sugar, but it's possible they are adding sugar. More likely in the Blue Moon than the Sam Adams, I'd think.

All of these responses and no link to the paleo thread, ya'll are slackin.

In my opinion colon health is the foundation of the bodies proper function. Do some independent research from people like Mercola and Daniel P. Reid, for 3 months follow just half of their nutritional philosophies, and keep lightly drinking beer, I will all but guarantee your symptoms will begin to fade rapidly. The difference you see will become annoying to your friends and anyone that you talk to about it as you become a nutritionally self righteous know it all with all the answers and the solution to everyones health problems.

Start off with a 10 day deep colon cleanse using Herbal Fiberblend (from AIM) while juicing and eating light raw foods. If you want real results go for the colonics and no food (except maybe some blue green alge or something similarly rich) but that might be a little extreme for your current daily habits.

After the cleans reestablish your guts biotic balance with Keefer and other probiotic rich fermentations. Eat raw foods as much as possible and completely cut out all grains and seeds.

I know it all sounds sooooo extreme, relative to the established mainstream solutions, but consider that before the formation of western medicine this is basically what was prescribed in the most advanced cultures for several thousand years.

Saw my general Doc (Internist) this morning. He was surprised by the P.A.'s recommendation. Said there are more contributing factors and other indicators (triglycerides?) that would be necessary for me to stop drinking. Going in for more blood-work tomorrow AM and have an in-depth physical scheduled for the end of the summer.

Excellent recommendation about getting records and bringing them with me. Doc was having difficult finding the lab and CT results. I was able to find it quickly in my paperwork.

I asked him about going back to the P.A. in 8 weeks. He said, "No, we'll handle this in our office." I liked that.

    BTW - He prefers IPA

There ya go. Obviously you might need to make some changes but this sounds a lot more like it. Good deal.
