    Photo Usage Rights Question

I buy a lot of photos and pay for a lot of photo shoots. However, most of the images are limited to 3 years usage, with limited rights. Then I have to pay to re-license the image after the expiration or if one of our members wants to use a photo they have to pay for it.

I’d like to start negotiating unlimited rights, no expiration and no usage restrictions. I’m willing to pay more for these rights, as long as the images are great. But wondering from the pro and semi-pro shooters on the board who make a living (if you can call it that) with their photography how realistic it is to be able to negotiate unlimited rights. I don’t want the shooters to feel ripped off, but managing photo usage rights and expirations is a pain.

And, if you’re interested in shooting for me (resort settings, family activities, ski/board action, etc.) please feel free to pm me.

    Thanks.

Yeah, it's doable. The bottom line is, as you've already pointed out, what's the price. The rule of thumb is what getty images charges, so look there for your starting points.

But I'll counter with this, what good will the imagery be in 3-5 years? In a fashion/trend centric industry like the snowsports industry is, a 3-5 year old image will appear pretty dated. Take that FWIW.

    Good luck.
This is the worst pain EVER!
