Yeah, much better to throw money at subscription services.

At least Android phones allow local storage of music. They just have too many problems with shit like compass and levels. And third party app developers hate android because of all the flavors and feature sets of devices.

Lol. Obviously tbs cares bigly about his music which is great.

I listen to whatever and am not a huge music head. I got YouTube premium way back to avoid ads. Had it for 10$ a month for 5 yrs, now 15$. It's my only media bill. And it also includes YouTube music.

My pixel seems to automatically download a ton of music so there is always something there. I can't complain. If I had a satellite TV/cable/whatever bill and a ton of other bills I would probably be irked by a monthly subscription.

My mom is paying fucking 180$ a month for a few channels and and a landline. Getting raped by legacy providers. Fuck.

And their security is sorta shit too.

I hear you, and used to be in the same boat. But unlimited music in my pocket that I don’t have to track and store and organize is worth the sub fee for me. It also keeps my catalog more diverse and slightly less anchored to the shit I listened to in high school and college.

I am not as in to certain artists or genres and always thought live recordings - outside of the odd acoustical rendering - to be sort of dumb when production value and quality is so much better with the studio versions.

Not that I’m saying I’m right. It’s just my opinion man and yours is almost certainly more informed than mine. I’m not a huge fan of wine either - I mean I like it just fine - because my palate isn’t sophisticated enough to appreciate it and I know it. It’s all just boozy grape juice to me, and any nuance is wasted on me.
    focus.

I'm in the local storage of music camp. Not a fan of play lists or algorithms picking what I listen to, typically play a full album. But it is a hassle. I just use the built in file browser for playing, which is really clunky.

I have a $50 off code for google store for anyone in the market for new phone:
"Share the code below with a friend, and when they buy a new Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8, or Pixel 7a, you’ll each get a $50 Google Store coupon code."

FWIW, I upgraded to the S24Ultra.

It's nice but not notably different from the 23. IMHO, the 23 is the best phone I've ever owned. I beat the shit out of and it survived totally intact w zero glitches and an incredible battery life. 24 seems like more of the same.

I will say the AI transcript function is pretty darned slick for meetings and the like and the cameras are sick. That said, I was hoping for something to have really changed for the excitement factor, and that's not the case.

Yeah, I haven't felt quite as stoked as when I got my very first Android phone, the HTC "MyTouch 3G." But perhaps that just goes to show how spoiled we've become? Back then, the differences between the competitors was WAY more distinct. These days? They're mostly all pretty damned good.

Just got a pixel phone replaced under google preferred care plan. Want to get the new phone covered under the same plan, if possible. I can’t figure out how to do it. Anybody done that before?

Seriously thinking about an iPhone 15 mostly because the camera is better than my 12 Mini and last I heard Apple was offering 2 yrs of satellite emergency text messaging.

Anyone made use of that satellite feature or have any comments on the program? Im assuming the monthly rate after that 2 yr trial will be comparable to Somewear etc devices.

I lightly dropped my pixel 5 and it got a nasty 1/4" vertical white line. I am super bummed. The phone never flt sluggish and I recently put a new battery in it. Does anyone have a pixel 5 they no longer need and want to sell it for cheap? I don't care what condition it is in as long as the screen is good.

It uses the GlobalStar network, which is used by Spot as well. I think there’s a relatively safe bet that Apples plans will be similarly priced, unless it can do something much more.

So the Pixel 6 that I've been enjoying for a while now just up and shit the bed. I was in the middle of a call and it just shut down. *poof* That sux, I still have almost another year on the payout from the "free" trade in Am I stupid for wanting the Pixel 7 or 8? I like the full integration with my Chromebook Plus and the Google Suite I run my business with so I'd kind of like to stay in their ecosystem. Anyone using the 7 or 8 and have any thoughts about it?

FWIW, Im still loving my very abused S24 Ultra. I know they're neither small nor cheap but they are really, really solid. Like never have to reset solid, drop it in a river solid.

Time to shell out for another iPhone for my wife. I think I finally have her convinced to buy a case with port dust covers.

I ended up with a Pixel 8 Pro. I've noticed that some stuff is much faster than it was with the 6. The 2 generations newer G3 processor seems to get the job done and double the ram makes it really quick opening docs and big files.

Overall, I'm happy with the Pixel 8, although the green screen issue popped up randomly a couple weeks ago and has popped up a few times since. It looks like Google has acknowledged the issue and is providing a 3 year warranty for it assuming my phone qualifies. I'm waiting for it to become a more than a minor inconvenience before I go down the road of pursuing a warranty. I've owned a pixel 4a and 6a previously and overall am happy with them. Both of the older Pixels have been handed down to my wife and kids and they're still going strong.

Getting mixed messages (groan) about whether or not the iOS 18 satellite messaging is basically only for emergencies, or if you can simply send a “honey, I’m running late “ text through it easily.
It seems that it goes through some sort of Apple SOS ‘dispatch’ first?
Has anyone successfully used it for a non-emergency, non roadside assistance message?

Here's a little thing about Android that has been plaguing me since sometime last year. I use my phone for personal and business so it became subject to the IT Admin policies which meant it had to operate under a Device Policy. Last year Google revised the device policy and my Pixel 6 stopped being able to open links so I'd have to copy and paste. It was a hassle that really slowed me down with work stuff so I spent about 20 hours on the phone with Google support and ultimately they couldn't help and eventually, I gave up. I set up the new phone and it wouldn't even let me paste, the only thing it would do is autofill with my personal info not even business info. I was up most of the night trying to figure this shit out, came across dozens of locked threads on Google support forums full of people complaining and begging for a solution and I also had a few posts deleted from Fb groups where I asked questions. Conspiracy!! Lol.

If you have a Samsung it's a slightly different solution that may not work all the time, apparently, you have to go into settings for the business profile and change the browser to Chrome from Samsung Internet. If that doesn't work you're fukked.

After a few hours, a common thread became evident, it's all related to that device policy. Since it's my business I'm obviously the Admin which meant learning about things I don't care to know. A few hours later I figured out how to eliminate the need for a device policy on devices not owned by the business. It turns out that it's an automatic thing and you have to dig a few layers down through the security setting to turn off the device management setting and even when you're there it's not obvious and feels like one of those things that might totally fuck you up when you click it. It's strongly recommended not to do that because it leaves a door open for nefarious actors but to me it seems that being completely disabled relating to anything work-related is worse.

It’s not possible yet, and won’t be until IOS 18 is close to release. Currently text by satellite is emergency only. Once 18 is out, they claim it’ll be open for non-emergency messaging. I’m guessing there may be limits, it’ll be slow for sure. They’ll get us hooked as they fine tune the system and then there will be costly add on plans for satellite messaging.

Plugged my Pixel 2 (yes) into the charger the other night. Picked it up the following day and it was off. No amount of holding power and volume buttons turns it on. Really like to get some pictures off it. Am I fucked?

Check the basic items- does the charger in fact work (any light on it)? Try another cable as maybe the cable went bad. If both those work on another device, then may want to check the port on the phone. Full of dirt and lint maybe and needs dusted out (canned air or do a Google search on cleaning phone charging port for your model.) Otherwise if you never get the charging symbol, then you may in fact have to do a repair of said battery or charging port to get the data. BUT why do you not have Google Sync and backup of all that stuff to the cloud and Google Photos and Google Drive???
