You need to compare the coverage - IF that is important to you depending on the areas you travel. The postpaid map is a bit stronger and has some areas that roaming (US Cellular and some other carriers) and some areas that are considered "Extended Network" Some are reporting that it is better being on the Prepaid if you have a phone that supports VoLTE calling also. That being said, Verizon will allow you to switch and go back if there would be something with the roaming or coverage. https://www.verizonwireless.com/feat...p=prepaid#maps

The coverage answer RShea plus, I thought it has gotten easier to BYOD to Verizon? Folks has reported taking their Nexus 5x and 6p to Verizon after they got sick of Fi? Whatever you do, make sure to do the proper homework. Asking Teh TRGs does not make full due diligence.

On a side note, Fi has gotten smarter. The deal for my new Moto x^4 pays out the $100 in Fi credit, not with an instant rebate AND I have to stay on Fi with that phone for 30 days to activate said credit.

I brought my Nexus 5x to Verizon under contract initially, then moved to Google Fi once the contract was up. No problems.

I'm still on Fi, but am thinking about grabbing a Motorola g5 plus 64gb and selling the Nexus 5X while it still works fine. If I do, then I'll join Mrs C on Total Wireless - it's been working great for her.

I'd give up free international roaming, but that's not something I'll use more than once a year, or maybe twice if lucky. Otherwise I'll have a lot better coverage than Fi and lots more data.

Verizon has pretty much always in recent years allowed the bring your own device- as long as it is on their list of compatible phones with all their bands and frequencies and is unlocked or on their blacklist for not paying the cancellation fee or finance the phone and not paying the phone off. What they do not allow is purchase a Prepaid device off a retailer shelf, then try and use it immediately on their postpaid or contract plans without at least getting 1 prepaid card for the prepaid phone first. Best if you have a device that you want to use is to get the MEID and contact Verizon to verify it will work. They also could charge you an activation fee and sim card.

Ok I just reviewed the last 10 pages.
That was a lot of data to get though.
    #PhoneJokes

Haven't seen anyone mention the LG Venture.
Seems like it would be a hit with this crowd, I fondled it in the store.
Impact and water resistant, battery hypothetically lasts 4 to 5 days on standby, or more than a day with heavy use… Grippy diamond stud rubberized back plate, seems like might be able to get by without a protective case?

I have two phone numbers for work and personal, thinking about leaving one number on my aging i6S+ And trying something like the venture at $324 to check out the android platform. Would be nice if it had replaceable battery but with a battery that strong seems like it would get by for 2 to 3 years.

I've had AT&T for a lot of years, occurs to me reading through this thread that I could split up the phone numbers and have different carriers. Might actually be signing up with Comcast today, I guess I will ask if it would be advantageous to have one number on Comcast and keep one on ATT. Primary reason I like ATT is it seems to have the best coverage up on the ski hill in Colorado. I don't travel a ton but from what I've seen I always have coverage at least as good as my friends if not way better.

I did call Verizon customer service yesterday and she was super easy to talk to and spoke fluent English. That was refreshing after dealing with barely intelligible ATT customer service over the last couple of days.
From what I can tell Verizon and ATT plans are about the same money, but verizon unlimited may be advantageous due to no throttling of speeds after 22 gigs. Once I get new home Internet again I probably won't need that though…

Any recommendations for a home router to run the Comcast? If there something vastly superior for an extra 50 bucks that wouldn't bother me.

I have been on my X^4 for a few days now. It isn't knocking my socks off.

The battery life is remarkably better than my Nexus 5x. And the usb-c cable doesn't fall out, so it is easier to charge. The only new feature it really brings to the table for me is the front mounted fingerprint reader. I never used the reader on my old phones. This is pretty useful Now I need to add some fingerprints from my left hand. It also was a better water rating, which I hope to never need.

On the other hand... It came with Android 7.1 which is a step down. The 5x has 8.0. Sure, the new phone has a circle widget. But it isn't anything like the old Moto circles. I miss those. They were a great fidgit toy that was also useful and customizable. The &_$#@! protruding camera bezel fucking sucks. Fortunately I always buy a case so now the phone will lie flat. And having a glass back, you definitely want a case. Who the fuck puts a glass back on a phone? The 80s called, they want their Crack back. Hopefully Speck comes out with a Candyshell Grip case pronto. Those are my favorites. The position of the power switch was moved. Why???

So in the end, I will end up paying $249 after a $50 buy back and $100 Fi credit to replace my Nexus 5x. My old phone was "broken" enough that it sucked but not broken enough for them to replace it free. I also can't help thinking that Fi should have just gone with ANY one of the four Moto G5 models as it's budget phone. I am not alone in that.

And I think I know how the usb-c port loosened up. One of my charging cable ends has a slight deformation that made it oversized in one dimension. That was the one charger that would stay in. I noticed the way tight fit when I plugged it into my new phone. I am tossing the charger. It's a one piece. Plus the USB port is on the bottom of the phone, which doesn't help. It is hard not to rest the phone on the cable if you use it while charging. I wish they would move it back to the top like the old Atrix. Of course with better battery life hopefully I won't have to use it while charging. Bottom mounted is better for car charging if you use a phone holder. As long as the cable is tight and doesn't fall out.

First off the cell phone discussion- I think every single Unlimited plan out there has a mention that they limit 4G data up to a certain point, and that if you go over that, especially on busy or already congested towers that they can throttle your speed until the next renewal period. Some companies (T-Mobile is one I read about regularly) that others are reporting not noticing the throttling so YMMV. Also coverage can vary greatly- so for the ski hill pretty much have to check out the map and drill down and of course ask others what they have for carrier and if the are getting good signal and coverage all over the mountain.

And also one thing to consider is there are few GSM dual sim models out there- would that be allowed (work phone allowing BYOD instead of using their device??) and allow you to only carry a single device with both the numbers set up on it???

As for a router- I always recommend a good modem device alone- even one provided by the ISP, or purchase your own if the ISP wants to charge you a monthly rental fee. As for the routers - best 2 seem to be either Asus or TP-Link AC series routers from most reviews and discussions. Speeds can vary even within AC dual band standard (AC750 up to AC3200 or so- most can usually not worry about anything over AC1900 though.) (And remember also that the AC speeds are at 5 ghz only and will do nothing for the typically popular and overcrowded 2.4 ghz G or N devices out there.

I'm still on Google Project Fi, on a Nexus 5X, and got this email from them:

Trade in a Nexus 5X and earn up to $150 trade-in credit (details below). And for a limited time, with $75 off the Android One Moto X4, you can score a new Fi-ready device for as little as $174 (regularly $399)

Anyone here using a Moto X4? Likes, dislikes? Seems like a decent offer.

Thanks RShea. Certainly some advantages to one phone with two numbers but extra phone has benefits as well. Double the battery and extra if lost or stolen away from home. I'll check out the hardware mentioned.

Probably fits in this thread as well as any other. Anyone try Comcast home security? I haven't had home security for years but if this drought keeps up I might head north for a month or two.

If you want to go with dual sim, then maybe Asus Zenfone still has that as a feature. I had my hands on one of their second generation Zenfones and it was not a bad phone from a feel and usage (granted I was helping set it up and only used it for a short period- never carried it around and tested it completely)... There are some other dual sim models - but you also have to make sure you verify the phone has both of the slots unlocked and usable for US carriers- some of these were designed to be US locked to a specific carrier and the 2nd slot was designed to be used only with carriers outside the USA while traveling and not for day to day usage of both the carriers at the same time....

Have not had my hands on the Moto X4- I'd read some reviews out there, see what others are commenting about.
See what used Nexus 5X are going for on Swappa or Ebay closed auctions, then do the math of the $225 off they are offering for the trade in deal. Of course just sending them the 5X is not requiring you to deal with something like Craigslist for local sale and meet-up, or fees on Ebay (they have been running some special bonus offers to have cell phone sales listings though)... so quicker and all for a fast turn around.

So. The 'deal' I got on the X^4 was a $50 trade-in for my 5x and $100 Fi credit (after 30 days).

It boils down to how much do you hate your 5x?

The battery life sucked on mine. And the usb-c was very loose so charging it was a pain.

The X^4 Android One comes with Android 7.latest. That's a step backwards.

I do like the front mounted fingerprint reader. I never used one on my other phones. This made me use it and like it

Unfortunately the X^4 has a glass back AND a huge ugly camera bezel. A case is required.

Honestly, I only had my 5x for 1.5 years and would have liked another year out of it. The new phone doesn't seem like a step up. It's a $249 replacement for what I already was supposed to have with a nice added feature. I am not a camera person so I don't know if the camera is all that.

Fi was the deciding factor. I would rather have spent the money on a Moto G5S Plus.

How much do you hate your 5x?

I'm not thrilled about the glass back on the X4. I've been looking at getting the Moto G5S (or S+) in the 4gb RAM version, and switching from Fi to Total Wireless.

I don't think the Nexus 5X is worth all that much, used, so Google's offer of trading it in and getting a X4 for $175 seems decent.

I don't hate it at all. I'm just expecting it to die sometime, randomly, based on all the reports of them failing. It works fine for my uses, other than the battery life not being that great.

Then if you have had it for a year or more, it is probably worth the 'upgrade' if you want to stay on Fi. That's the other kicker. No way would I get an X^4AO, or even a regular X^4, if I didn't want Fi. I would much prefer the G5S+. The handful of times that I go to Canada is worth putting up with slightly worse coverage where I live for the same price i would pay if I was on the AT&T plan I have for my wife. Fi data coverage in Cannuckistan is money!

I can’t believe AAPL basically getting a free pass on this so far. My phone degraded significantly after the last update on basically a two year old phone. Totally planned degradation. I was pretty loyal until this.

If Steve Jobs would hose over his Buddy Woz for a nickel, do you think he would act responsibly with you?

Do you think Apple replaced him with a more caring person?

I would love to dig him up and pee on him. Jobs had no problem shafting the consumer.

Did/does anyone here own a Nexus 6P? Oreo update was large enough that my 16GB 5X only has around 1GB of actual working memory. There's several used 64GB 6Ps for sale locally for $200-250. I don't really want a larger phone, but it seems like my best option for a Fi-compatible phone on the cheap. Does the camera have the same horrendous shutter lag the 5X camera does for action shots?

Check for deals and trade-in value on the 5x at the Fi site and then get an X^4. Sure, I complained above. However id rather have that than a used 6p for about the same price.

Lol @ Apple. We're doing it for YOU....you can't possibly think for yourself. Plus new phone sales are far more profitable than replacement batteries.

I think you're confuzzled. Your 5X has 16GB of internal storage which does not effect working memory. It shipped with 2GB of RAM of which 1GB is currently available it seems. That's not too bad.
