I just upgraded from a Samsung Galaxy s5 to an s7, and hardly notice a difference. The s7 was pretty cheap on B&H Photo for an unlocked phone. the s8 is still ridiculously expensive, but I'm glad its out so previous gens are cheap.
Replacing the battery on my s5 was a piece of cake, and I would just carry a spare charged battery on hut trips. Stay in airplane mode except when needed and it was easy to get through a long trip even placing music on a bluetooth speaker. The s7 has a replaceable battery, but I haven't looked to see how easy it is yet.
I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...iscariot
Well fuck, I just researched changing a s7 battery, and it is a royal pain in the ass, nothing like the s5. Oh well, I should have done more home work. Live and learn.

Every battery is replaceable if you have the time, knowledge and a soldering iron and tools to get to it. But as more phones try and protect better against moisture, the cases are sealed better and no USER replaceable battery that can be done by popping the rear cover and pulling one out and inserting the other.
I am even getting ready this weekend to switch over to my next phone- complete without a replaceable battery. Booster batteries are getting cheaper all the time. There are some that even do a booster battery- Morphie and similar as part of the case (but does add to the thickness of the phone.)

One week in and I'm loving the Pixel 2 XL. The screen issues reported on demos seem non-existent on my phone so far. And with a 2 year warranty I'm not sweating it.
The build quality is noticeably better than my previous Pixel XL. It's fast as balls too. Already had BT headphones, so no jack is a NBD for me. Liking the slimmer profile in hand and pocket.
The camera is amazing, and the new portrait mode is just stunning. A co-worker has an S8 and we did a photo competition that her phone clearly won over my old Pixel XL in March. We tried again a few days ago and the Pixel 2 XL blew the S8 out of the water. Unlimited full resolution automatic cloud backup on Fi is baller AF.
Also the battery life is fucking bad ass. Heavy use all day and I've been going to bed with over 30%.
The AI shit is getting pretty frigging dialed...if you're into that sort of thing. Loving the email and now text message auto reply buttons. The mic is definitely recording everything and trying to sell me shit though, which I'm not sure is fascinating or terrifying... definitely not for everyone.
Overall, if you are on your phone a lot and don't mind paying a premium price for arguably the best phone out there, I highly recommend it... especially if you can get the Fi Pixel trade-in like I did.

Anyone have the new LG V30 (or the older V20?). It ticks all the boxes for audio nerddom, and is the one I am gravitating towards. The only thing I don't particularly like is the size (6"x3") which is ginormous compared to my Iphone 5.

I'm right at a month with the V30. I love it. The audio stuff is great, and the wide-angle camera has been very useful. I was really unwilling to lose the headphone jack & SD card, as so many of the new ones require, and water resistance is an absolute must for me. I wish it had a metal back, bc the glass is stupid & forces me to put it in a case, which i never had to do with my venerable S5.
Battery life is good. I can kill it in a day if I really try, but for average use (a few calls, lots of texts, some web browsing, and 5-8 hours of music listening usually with BT) it ends the day with 30+%.
I came from an S5, and have used my SO's S7 a bunch. The LG is bigger, and even with XL hands I find it a tiny bit awkward for one-handed use. Still, the larger screen size makes it so much better to read or search for stuff on that I'll take the trade-off. I hardly use my tablet anymore, even for long-form news article reading.
It has a couple of features that I wasn't expecting to like so much. One is the fingerprint thing, which is perfectly placed & works instantly, every time. The other is the "double tap" to unlock the screen, which is really great when it's sitting on a table at home (set as a non-locking gps location).
If consumers read the spec sheets & vote with their wallets instead of choosing based on blind brand loyalty, LG will have a real market leader here.

I am ordering the v30, just waiting to see if there are any Black Friday/cyber Monday deals.
Excited about the audio, and....an FM tuner!
(I listen to a lot of NPR).
Can you set it up to not need the fingerprint or a password?

I'm no phone tech nerd but thanks to destructive habits and a demanding job I've owned quite a few. I just got a Note 8 and am very impressed. FWIW I'm generally an Android guy, have owned several Samsung's and use a Pixel Tablet. but The new Note is super fast, easy to use and I dig the note function. They addressed quite a few of the minor annoyances I found on the S7 and the bloatware was noticably less.
Anyone know how to combine Moto's Black Friday deal on the X^4 with a buy back offer on my old phone? Fi's offer Is $110 for my 5x.
Moto X5 was going for 169.00 on Amazon. Not the Amazon ads model either. 32gb. Solid phone for under 200

Yes, you can choose whatever security you want, just like most Android phones. I have a couple of Bluetooth profiles that keep it unlocked (my car stereos), and it stays unlocked at home when it connects to my Wi-Fi. I could set it up to stay unlocked while in my pocket but my pocket has a way of pushing buttons. Once it initiated a factory reset of another phone.
Fwiw I think you have to download an app and/or change some settings to get the FM tuner to work. I haven't tried, since I just listen to podcasts all the time anyway.
I bet the Black Friday deals will be decent for this phone. I paid full retail , but got a $200 gift card deal from Verizon. That made it effectively $600.

You can set the phone up with no security most of the time. However there are some apps like corporate email (Outlook, and other Exchange mail packages) and some other typically financial or other apps that may want a security lock on the phone- either a passcode (pin number), or some use a fingerprint, screen pattern and a few phones have some other methods also. Some of these security utilities also allow you to remotely wipe the data on a lost or stolen phone also.
I have the V20, so not sure if the V30 is exactly the same, but one thing that makes security less intrusive is the ability to swipe straight into the camera without using the fingerprint. I think phone calls and everything else is still locked out but that's been a great feature when wearing gloves etc. and makes it easier to use the security features.
LG X Power. $70 new, $30/mo plan with Boost. Battery lasts for days, screen is bigly but not too yuDge. When I break it, I can buy another for less than the average lifecycle cost of insurance on a fancy pants phone. More dirhams for things like travel, such & so forth. Ymmv

Right. Great deal on a decent phone especially for the price. Great for the kids or anyone needing a backup/replacement or fleet of phones. It doesn't help me though because it isn't Fi compatible. And if I was looking at Moto phones for non Fi use, the G5s Plus is what I would recommend. I think it nails the sweet spot for price and features.
Moto does have some phone that works on Fi. Just saw something about it the other day. Hmmm.

Yes, its the Moto X^4 I mentioned above. My question to the collective was does anyone know how to combine the Moto $60 Black Friday sale with teh Google Fi buy back offers.
...And Fi just lowered their buy back offer from $110 to $50. However, they are also offering $100 of Fi credit. So there's my answer.
I see hydraulic turtles.
Thanks guys/
The only BF deals I could find on the V30 are Verizon Buy 1 get 1 with service, and and (ATT) a $400 dollar gift card for a new LG product at full retail. Not exactly what I am looking for.
Maybe cyber Monday...

Moto G5 Plus in on sale for $170 at Costco right now.
Why shouldn't I switch from Verizon post paid to Verizon prepaid for my wife and I?
