I thought gizoogle was "buying" the Pixel team from HTC (with hookers and blow).
They may have, and so technically they may have designed the phone (with an HTC team), but HTC built the phone.

Google purchased Motorola and used them for a few of the Nexus phones while they owned Motorola - then sold it off to Lenovo (at a loss), and then Pixel was jointly done with - HTC . And then they just purchased part of HTC - so predictions are they will start offering the higher end phones through HTC (which made the Pixel and Pixel XL and the Pixel 2) - but the Pixel 2 XL is an LG manufactured phone. Possibly the other part of the HTC will do low end phone design or just fade away. At least one of the Nexus models in the transition away from the Motorola purchase was done by Huawei and another by LG.
As for the other manufacturers making phone for Fi- many of the unlocked phones with the proper frequency bands for both the Fi carriers (T-Mobile and Sprint) probably would work- IF Google would let bring your own device to the program, but they want to limit hardware probably and bring your own device has many more technical support issues involved in it and while Project Fi is still being a developed further and expanded.
Oreo definitely improved the battery life on my N5x. It is still subpar but I might be able to get through more than a few hours using location.
I ended up scoring a 128 gb Pixel for cheap the weekend Google announced the Pixel 2. Really liking it thus far, the lack of bloatware compared to my brother's S8 is noticeable.
New to the smartphone world, what apps are you guys using to sync notes/reminders/appointments/etc?
The default calendar app works fine for appointments and reminders. I've been using evernote for notes but it's really gone down hill since they changed to a paid business model.
Syncing from and to what? Google Calendar does appointments (from desktop access or the mobile app included in every Android phone...
If you use Outlook on a desktop and it is connected to an Exchange Email Server, then it has capabilities of appointments/calendar, tasks, and of course email... Outlook mobile app on the phone, or there are a few other ActiveSync apps that connect to Exchange Servers...
Lots of Todo and memo apps out there also in the play store.
Widgets are where it's at. I use one called "calendar widget" from +1 Labs which gets loaded onto one of my home pages. Obviously synchs with Google calendar. I also use a widget for the tasks that synchs with Google tasks called "Tasks Free" from Team Tasks. They're nice looked and no frills. Add in Nova launcher with the GEL icon pack and my phone looks sharp.
Here is a new review/comparison between the newest Samsung Note 8, LG V30 and the 2 new Pixel phones:

I love the Chronus widget on my home screen linked up with work and personal Google calendars. It's super clean and allows me to see everything that's coming up without opening any apps.

I have an iphone 6s. I just did the 11.0.3 software update. What a poor decision. Now the phone is very motherfucking slow. The battery life is also shit. Fuck you Apple.
My wife had a similar issue and reset the location services and other settings I believe. Updates always means you need to look at your settings.

I've been wanting a new phone for a while now, but all of the flagships left something to be desired. The S5 I've had forever ticked important boxes for me: headphone jack, SD, waterproof, durable. The new ones mostly left at least one of those out...until now.
The LG V30 is kind of amazing, and I'm really enjoying it so far. I'll report back if the luster fades... I'm glad they produced a true flagship that doesn't skimp on the things people actually want.
ride bikes, climb, ski, travel, cook, work to fund former, repeat.
So this is happening...
Will post a Pixel 2 XL review soon. Lots of doom and gloom about screen burn in, but we'll see.

Considering jumping to an Android to try the platform. I have two phone numbers for personal and work. 6+S for about 2 years. Battery is fading but other than that, and the spell checker I like it ok.
Since I have a large screen phone with some bells and whistles thinking about going bare bones and possibly used/refurb just to test the droid platform.
I'm on ATT and not super happy with the bill but coverage on the ski hills is better than anything else I've seen. Not sure if that's part phone or all just service?
Buying a used droid is a little worrisome since part of the benefit would be a stronger battery than my 6+S for ski dAys when it's cold. I do the trick of internal pocket blah blah, but if the shit hit the fan and trying to get emergency help in the trees I don't think it would last.
Could purchase a new droid of one of the cheaper models.
Ideas?
LG G5 has replaceable batteries. They're a good phone.

Motorola G5 Plus- unlocked to any carrier you want- available new for right around $200 up to $225 if there is no sale going on. Or their newer G5s Plus is $279 (big 300 mAh battery but NOT removable afaik- but does have a turbo charger that takes 15 minutes to do an all day charge boost) May want to watch the upcoming Black Friday for cell deals (you could even maybe roll the dice and purchase it from a retailer that will do a 30 day price match guarantee if you can't wait for the phone you want.) Then if it is one of the deals out there from a merchant, you could submit a claim.
If you have to have a removable battery, that narrows your choices a bit- the newer Samsung Galaxy's are not removable (and the Galaxy S8 is pretty pricey). The S5 was the last Galaxy flagship phone offering a removable battery. The only recent model from Samsung is the J7 phone- but be careful as only the 2017 model is removable the first edition of this phone was non-removable battery. Also not as well known is the Galaxy On8 which is similar pricing to the Motorola G5 series.
LG as mentioned has a number of models with removable batteries. At least 3 of the newer V series and a few others like the G5 SE from LG. https://www.androidauthority.com/bes...attery-697520/ or this article: http://www.insidermonkey.com/blog/7-...n-2017-582951/
However with all the external booster chargers out there for under $10 for a 2600 mAh to 5000 mAh, I think it is just as easy to carry one and a charger cable and plug it in if needed to get through the day of skiing.
Thanks for the ideas.
Removable battery not necessary, just saying if I buy a used phone and the battery is toast , won't be much of a benefit.
$200 for a new phone sounds good.
Thought from comments battery dying in cold was only an iPhone thing are androids doing this too?
Yeah, it's more of a battery thing than an iPhone thing.
I am pretty set on the LG. I keep my phones until I break them. I love my Moto X (2014) but the battery is becoming unusable. If I was able to swap in a new one I'd have no reason to upgrade.
Just got my first smartphone. Galaxy J3. I don't stream video on it or use it for music. It seems to do fine with web surfing, email, texting, and gps. Takes acceptable photos and video. You can even make phone calls with it. The price was right. I'm sure I'm missing out on some features and performance but I haven't figured out what. Easy to use for a senile technophobe. Battery is removeable I think (I think I saw the sales person put it in when I bought it). I haven't tried talking to it.
My kid has an iphone 6s. He updated to new IOS at apple's suggestion and says it sucks battery life. He can't go back to old IOS. Hoping there's a patch coming.
I bought a small external battery (not phone specific). Good thing to have in the bag for the ski hill, long day trips, etc.
