Cool. Thanks. Perhaps I exaggerated (guy thing, right?). It's more like 1/4" play. But still very noticeable.

If your pair has shiny black tongues, it'll probably have the original ski/walk mechanism with a plastic bushing around the pin. Those bushings can crack and create slop. Newer RS's with matte black tongues have ski/walk mechanisms with brass bushings. Scarpa has retrofit kits available if your plastic bushings give you trouble. The kit also includes new ski/walk bars with horizontal stops to prevent overflexing the upper cuff while in walk mode. (The original version stop is a small dome-shaped punch, which can pull through the ski/walk mechanism if enough force is applied.)

Scarpa also has replacement hinge kits for the tongue, which include t-nuts. No need to have shells replaced, just get new hinges. Thumbs up to Scarpa for having these readily available.

I had a set of the orange Maestrale's and ended up getting a lot of play in the cuff due to the aluminum cant rivets wearing down. I replaced them with a set of steel ones that Scarpa provided and that got them working again. I've now got a set of the RS's and haven't checked if they switched these to steel as well. That could be an issue if you notice the play around the cant area.

good info on this thread guys, thanks. so after trying on some vulcans, mercurys, and freedoms im pulling the trigger on the RS. most comfortable fitting boot for me with my narrowish high arched foot. I run a 29.5 mondo. i found a pair here locally in Tahoe, but im still looking for that great deal. Anyone hear of a place where the price is right for these boots? Id consider a pair of used ones but they gotta be this years RS with liner unmolded (ideally)

hoping that if i wash my truck, dog, bike and buy some ski boots and tech binders that should appease the snow gods here in Tahoe. hope everyone is gonna get after it in the next few days with this storm brewing, but once again missing Tahoe

OK I just wanna clarify as I dig around for a pair of these. If i'm looking for a "real" size 28 in Scarpa I want either a 27.5 or 28.0 right? My understanding is that the full size is true and then it goes up on the next half size.

I don't know how they break sizes. But I swear my new 26 RS's are roomier than my 3 year old OG Orange Maestrale were when I bought them. Or my foot has become skinnier.

For All the other ski boot makers a 28 and a 28.5 use the same shell/different liner

    For Scarpa a 27.5 and a 28 use the same shell/different liner

it sounds to me like your "understanding" is rong but you would look for a 28 scarpa

Lee Lau did a pretty awesome and exhaustive comparison between the Vulcan and Maestrale RS for our review section, which you can find here: http://www.tetongravity.com/reviews/...Review-434.htm

From my perspective, Scarpa won that battle. A cheaper boot with an Intuition liner sounds like more value to me.

yup maestrale rs kills it with the decent liner made by Intuition and real dynafit fitting for less $

BUT if it don't fit, it don't fit ... I went mercury

I did tell the dynafit rep IMO the shitty liner kills more sales than the $ they are saving by specing palau

I know Scarpa beaks on the half size. That was the basis for my question. What I was wondering is whether the "real" 28 shell (220-225ish bsl) was the 27.5/28 or the 28.5/29. In other words I wasn't sure how the half size break works, and Roj was kind enough to confirm my suspicion so I didn't have to get out of my chair and into my car. Also, I highly doubt there's a difference in the liners, that would be pretty dumb. Probably just the thickness of the insole, as is the case with other boots. I guess the real question here should be, that if the full size is true and consistent with how other manufacturers do it, and Scarpa breaks on the half size like a bunch of god damned weirdos, then why do they even have half sizes in the first place? Lots of brands have gone half size only, so maybe it's time for Scarpa to go full size only and stop confusing the shit out of people. I shudder to think about how many people who know their normal boot size have ordered the wrong thing because Scarpa has to be different.

Has anyone had an issue getting ahold of Scarpa for the retrofit kits? I've sent a three or four emails and have had no response.

I believe at least some Dynafit race boots break on the half size as well. No idea why. It's dumb.

This a print medium and so I didn't get that^^ from your original question ... it just smelled funny

I have heard the sizing is true so a 28 is a true 28, this is all still better than when scarpa used english sizing, why did an Italian boot company use english sizing?

I figured a simple "yes" was WAY too simple and direct/correct an answer for xxx-er to fathom.

but that's what you get with gear whores/overthinkers.

Do I want eggs or pancakes for breaky, a YES answer woudl be benign because either could be right and besides I don't leave anyone with wrong notions

you did answer half the question correctly but the "because" part of the question was left wrong , some would say it was a half assed answer but then you do many things that way which is ok .... if it only affects you

what's there to argue over a simple yes/no answer? hypnotoad got his answer in one word which he stated above. then you couldn't leave well enough alone, per usual. just like in the intuition TR, and many others.

yer a techy queer/ just accept it
