prices getting redonkulous, yes, but that's to be expected with what's happening with the Euro exchange rate. Distributors need to keep their margins and recoup that added expense somehow unfortunately. probably see ski prices (or anything else for that matter) that are manufactured in Yurp increase next year too as a result.

US Dollar a few years ago: 1.3 Euros
    US Dollar now: 0.77 Euros

There's your explanation. A binding that was $250 is now $422 just from exchange rate.

Guess what: terrible American fiscal policy actually has an effect. And it's going to get a lot worse.

I think it might be a bit more complicated than that.

Once Telemark-Pyrenees, Sport Extreme, and Barrabes started attracting American customers US importers (like Black Diamond) had to lower their mark-up in a lot of products, Scarpa ski boots and Fritschi binders for example. As I recall in 2002/2003 BD had carefully priced the Freeride to cost almost exactly what they would cost from TP (w/ shipping).

Apparently they're not doing that next year, but as of right now the cost of a Freeride from TP with shipping is still sub $400. So where does that discrepancy come from? Overhead costs shouldn't be the explanation as I'm sure it's cheaper to send bindings in bulk to Utah versus one-at-a-time from France. Also, I believe that BD and the French Fritschi distributor buy their bindings at the same price. Will the french distributor increase their wholesale price next year too, and raise the european price on AT binders? Or is BD slapping on a higher mark-up than they have in the past few years?

Let's see - I can get a Garmont Adrenalin delivered to my door DHL for $400. US price is $600? Same with Denali TT. Dynafit Comforts cheaper as well. I wonder where the extra markup is coming from?

To the best of my knowledge, Naxo and Fritschi come from Switzerland which is not part of the EU, so no Euro $$ involved here. The Swiss Franc stands alone as a very strong currency and is crushing the American dollar right now, a lot more than the Euro. This is probably why binding prices are increasing so much. I heard that Swiss watches are going up by 70% in North America, a lot worse than bindings.

The Euro's gone up 24% against the dollar since January 2003. The Swiss Franc has gone up 15%.http://www.xe.com/ict/table.cgi

The Denali's were from Telemark Pyrenees if I remember right - may have been for the XT not the TT. And if you haven't seen the Tornado pictures, it looks sweet!

I think I looked at the barrabes thing a while ago and they were sold out or at least I couldn't put any in the shopping cart. But good price if you can pull it off.

We should be glad then that the bindings are not coming from the EU or they would be even more expensive. Like $600 per pair!

The discrepancy could well be an extended credit payoff against a Euro that's stronger now than when the order was placed and a beancounter's suggestion on how to recoup the earnings shortfall. I'd bet BD gets a better price than TP since BD has exclusive distributorship for the US market (NA?), which dwarfs the bulk TP sells in competition with numerous other European distributors.

Anyone see any good products PM Gear should carry?
