    Unhappy LA San Gabriel Mags

If any LA mags happen to be skiing the BC near Mt. Waterman, specifically the first gully west of the resort, such as it is now, directly below the pond, and exiting below the big roundabout turn where kind drivers pick up riders to take them back up for another lap, you may find a ski and a pole there. It's a BD flicklock, very new, and an old orange ski, don't remember what kind, with part of an old fritschi binding on it. These items belong to my friend, who for the sake of his pride shall remain nameless. He took a HUGE fall last weekend, on steep bulletproof gnarliness, and these items had to be left behind in order to get to the hospital in a timely manner to get some stitches and find out if it was only broken ribs or worse. Only broken ribs, thankfully. Anyway, if you happen to find any of this stuff, I am sure my buddy would like some or all of it back, especially that new pole. E-mail me if you find any of this stuff before I can get back to get it. There's a sixer in it for you.

    San Gabriels

Did you see this link waterman death . north facing aspects in the San Gabriels are slide for life material right now.I had an experience like that last season on Baden Powell. The snow looked good but once you get on it, it is bulletproof death. I skied some runs in the Big pines area of Wrightwood up highway 2 on Saturday.South east facing snow was corn, but anything in the shade was bulletproof death. We need warm weather to soften it all up into corn. By the way I would call up Newcombs ranch and ask someone there to look for your pole. Those dudes go up there all the time

I can't believe what I read in the link in your post. I have spent some of the best days of my life on that mountain. Do you know where I can find more info about this tragedy?
I skied Saturday as well in the Big Pines area. Were you one of two guys I saw who said you were going up to the radio towers? the rest of my party werre interested in going to Baden Powell, so I had to relay the grisly details of the snowpack and probable condidtions. Instead we had a nice long mellow tour to the top of Mt. High East. Probably better conditions that on Baden Powell.

Yep that was me and my buddy Bloodbut. You can probably get more info if you email this guy .I am not sure but I think Barry was the dude that ran the show up there, big mustache, long hair always cruising around on his sled.It blows that Waterman hasn't opened the last two seasons ,but now this has happened I don't think it ever will again, really tragic.BTW how did you guys get up to the lifts I thought the road was closed 3 miles past Newcombs?

So Barry was the tall skinny guy who was always up there in the tan carhart jumpsuit? That is unbeleivable and totally sucks.
On the Sunday that we skied NEAR Waterman, we walked from the road closure at the 6000' level to the gully we wanted to ski and booted up the ridge. The ridge tops out right near where there is what I suppose is a snowmaking pond, just East of the flat road that leads from the top of chair two to the warming hut. This would be the gully where the phone? electric? line crosses the road below where you ascend on the road to the big 180 turn. Dug a pit, lolled around till eleven, and then had a longer day than we had intended. I've gotta buy that guy a file.

Well we would have probably just done laps of the face runs had the road been open. Do you have any idea why the road is being closed MILES before the places it has previously been open to? Islip Saddle and Vincent Gap have always been the places where the road has been closed in the past, except under extraordinary circumstances. Budget cuts, I guess. Those darn adventure passes should fund ther road staying open, I think.

    Cal Trans?

I hear you! I don't get it either, for us it sucks, there is alot of great skiing off hwy 2, but you can't get to any of it anymore without walking for miles. There are probably land slides from the rain we got and the fact that California is broke, Cal trans probably doesn't get funding to do the work to keep the road open.Thats my guess. Yeah and you would think all the money the FEDS rip everyone off with that stupid adventure pass they could plow the frigin road!! BTW I don't have the pass and I didn't get a ticket last Sat even though the ranger drove to the end at least 3 times while we were messing around at the car.

I don't have a pass, either, and got no ticket last Sat. BUT, we both got one the week before at the 6000' parking lot. You will notice your car and the two from my group were the only cars at that closed gate last Sat. The Sunday before, when we finally got back to the parking lot, was a zoo. I think they intend to box up the road to make it easier to give tickets to people. That's easier than plowing the road.

I was up there Saturday, too. That particular day was "No Pass Needed," per a sign posted at one of the ranger stations.

Per the ranger, CalTrans has been promising on a daily basis to open that gate at 6K for weeks now. There was a pretty good avalanche that'd covered the road up past Waterman, but that's been cleared.

Hope your buddy heals fast, and gets his lost gear back.
