Why do we like to measure things in reference to the length of a football field?

What else would you reference it to? Everyone has been on a football field before.
Funny you should mention it though, cause I just saw them use a football field to compare the size of the new Airbus Jet.

It is pretty universal if you are in theUS you reference to an NFL feild, if you are in Canada you refernce to the larger CFL feild if you are in any soccer playing country you call that football and reference a pitch (field). It gives everyone the same idea. Or it's because no one can figure out area and you need help and everyone plays American football.
