[running and ducking]
sorry for starting another high life thread, but then again this is tgr's bored.
i got high life in the mail the other day, watched it yesterday. thoughts/reactions:
highlights for me:
utah pow segment - holy shit. made me and the guy i was watching it with (a buddy from texas that doesn't even own skis) want to immediately drop out of school and become latter day saints.
nobis+kreitler - good to see the older ex-ussa doods back in full form. they certainly seem to have a better perspective on skiing these days as well.
europe trip - i don't know the area they were in well at all, but seemed like a really neat trip. well presented in the movie, except for the kicker segment, but maybe that's because i tend to like big mountain shots more.
charlotte moats - marry me? seriously, please?
helmut cam - always one of my favorites. great point of view in some of those couloirs
editing (except for the nobis segment, which seemed somehow out of place in relation to the rest of the movie) - i liked the juxtapostion (christ, i've been writing too many papers this quarter and words like juxtapostion are finding their way into my everday vocabulary) of the black and white shots to break up the skiing into actual segments. athlete voiceovers were pretty neat, and for the most part they all commented on different aspects of "the life" so things didn't get too repetitive.
music - a highlight in the sense that i didn't cringe at the beginning of each segment. i was expecting worse. not great, but not terrible either, except for the opening-thank god i got the dvd version and can skip that.
overall:
i was throughly impressed. i'd put high life right up there with immersion as the best movies to come out (that i've seen) in the last two or three years. i for one have felt that there has been something missing from tgr's releases the past few seasons. they certainly didn't seem as coherent or inspiring as their first releases. high life is probably the best tgr movie i've seen since harvest. i would say it has the potential to become a sort of classic (much like continuum or sick sense) in the sense that 5 to 10 years from now, i'll be able to pop it in the dvd player and see the inklings of progression towards what defines the sport in the future, and it'll still be cool to watch.
afterthoughts:
my dvd "pauses" at the beginning of nobis's segment. i was using a dvd player with progressive scan, so after about 5 seconds it kicks in again, but i'm afraid that it might not work in a regular dvd player (i've seen some complaints about the nobis segment already in the forum). if so, i'm going to be uberpissed. has anyone heard anything from tgr about this problem?
about the snowboarding, i thought it was pretty sweet on the whole, minus the travis rice segment which i thought was one of the few lows of the movie (you can't win them all i guess). i don't see how people can complain about jeremy jones or victoria jealouse shots - so sick and so much stoke i almost forgot they were on boards.
also, some have complained about jamie's segment. i thought his comments was pretty funny myself, but i wasn't sure if it was supposed to be a joke or if that is the real him. either way, the best solution is always to point and laugh i reckon...
