I was also completely shocked by the amount of pain after my first ACL. It didn't hurt at all when I tore it... and I guess I didn't know what to expect. Percocets took the edge off, but it still hurt like hell. Then my next two knee surgeries didn't hurt much at all and I barely needed pain killers.
Difference - I thought I was elevating my knee the first time. I did it like they did it when I was in the hospital overnight. Sit there with a pillow under my foot like it's on an end-table or something. That's not elevated and I had no idea my leg could swell that much. Next time I had surgery, I went home immediately and laid flat on the sofa with my foot up on the wall or on a stack of pillows on the arm so it was WAY over my heart. Barely swelled and I hardly had any pain. I think it also makes a mental difference when you're expecting pain vs. when you aren't.
Anyway - sounds normal to me. Stay on top of the pain meds and take icing and elevating as seriously as possible. Oh - and make sure you're doing calf pumps or moving your foot in circles and that type of thing that gets the circulation flowing and keeps the swelling down or helps to get rid of what you have.
Heal up fast. I'm at almost 14 weeks and went XC skiing today. It won't be long before you can be doing stuff again...
"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, "Wow, what a Ride!"
