xxx'er...shit man...I don't have three seasons to wait...spent a good whack of time taking a really good look at the merc rear cuff today in the cool environs of the basement while the dreaded sun and heat slaughters our snowpack in the hills. I think it's worn out...flexes like a yogurt container lid. Thought i noticed those edge changes on hardpack weren't as crisp as before...chaulked it up to thick foam intuition liners... plan fiberglass reinforcement experiment might have to be fast tracked this summer. More play evident in lateral cuff rivets as well, hoping to ghettoworks that issue with some j.b. weld plastic bond if I can source some rivets and re and re. Or...maybe dynafit has some size 26 rear carbon cuffs kicking around a warehouse somewhere? but then, i might have to add some removable flex stops... all signs pointing to just buying the damn vulcans...

So I hear you saying you should just buy the Vulcans, consider there are also cheap Mercury's out there, but in any case now is the time of cheap deals ... do not leave it too long or your size will be gone

Swiss, can you take some pictures if you do any mods? I have a pair that need a bit of rebuilding and maybe some modding should be done at the same time

Here's one season tested mod that worked out not too badly for my two.5 season old, 300 day + mercuries. Lots of early season hiking in past few years totally wore off the sole rubber down to plastic at toes of boots to the point where stepping into dynafit bindings turned into a major hassle since the pins would close above the holes. I cleaned the area, scuffed it up a bit and added a few layers of regular old shoo goo as a test. To create a form i built a dam of duct tape to contain the fluid goo. After it dried i ground it down and shaped it back to factory spec. Worked out really good till now in spring. The fix held after many many bootpacks in lots of hard crust and icy conditions but then didn't survive so well in some sharp rock hopping bootpacks...one side chunked out...but, easy to fix, just grind it down clean and add more goo. Hope i don't get tech tip jonged for this probably add it there too.

I have the first generation Vulcans, the ones without the bump stops. I seem to be in the minority, but without the tongues in they are slightly softer than I'd like. I wonder if I could add the bump stops on.... Is there just a hole through the carbon cuff for them, or is it more complicated than that? Might be tough to get them in the exact right spot..

hey - can someone get me up to speed on the whole bump-stops thing? I've read through, but I'm a little confused. pretty much the same question as Wilcox above.

I've had vulcans for quite a while, but mine do not have any sort of bump stops. Can I drill some holes and add some? anyone done this?
I'm assuming this will stiffen the boot. is this correct? what other pluses/minuses of doing it?

I'm not a medical doctor but I did stay at holiday inn so here goes:

The first few versions of Vulcans had a limiter / stop shaped into the carbon cuff on the inside and the same with the Mercury but with fiberglass or grilamid.

Some people would grind those stops down for more forward flex.

Maybe the last 2 generations of Vulcans then offered stops with t-nuts and bolts so you can remove them rather than grind them off.

Dont try to drill thru CF.

Since your version must have the stops (if there aren't holes already there with removable stops - must be the bump stop - unless someone ground them down.

If you have them and don't want them your only real option is to grind them down.

If you're not looking for more flex / softer boot then there's no reason to do it.

yeah we knew that ^^^so dynafit retained the shittty liners, changed the color from green to green, made the cuff FG instead of carbon and bumped up the price 100$ on a now 4 yr old design to over 1000can$ ... I usually get kissed when I get fucked

you can find lightly used Vulcan shells out there for cheap, buy a intuition liner which doesn't really count cuz you probably have to buy them anyway and SO you have a slightly used vulcan for a few hundred bucks

Yeah, hopefully this helps with the second hand market though. I've tried on all the latest greatest but nothing fits like my mercuries, except Khions, but blah. I think I'm gonna have to go vulcan after they die.

The carbon lupos might be what the vulcan always wanted to be though. Real cabrio flex with a carbon upper, not a tongue boot with a spine.

Looks like EH is trying to get that flex off the tongue, not the spine with this mod. Elongated lean lock hole. Looks to let the boot flex freely into the tongue, but lock it back. Wonder if Dynafit's gonna fuck with that?

Wanted to try a flex feel mod to my mercuries before they passed away but it was too late. I was thinking layering soft to harder durometer elastomer onto a metal 'shelf' that fits into alu knob hole in a fashion that allows for more progressive flex from the spine while preserving hard stop rear support. metal 'shelf' could be either the alu knob shaved down in height with layers of rubber added, or, use a hardward store door hinge, cut and bend metal and screw it onto back of cuff. Found the flex that i wanted in my mango maestrales with intuition luxury liner. a bit soft but good enough.
    Master of mediocrity.

I know splitboarders commonly use the TLT6 with a bored out and elongated lean lock hole to similar effect JRainey. that would be a simpler mod than what Hoji's done.
I saw that vid a while ago too. trying to figure out what he's trying to achieve... although it's worth noting that you don't see many recent vids/photos of him wearing khions. vulcans instead.

I do like his mod of using a ratchet buckle to replace the ankle buckle though. that this is a pain in the ass! especially for swapping tongues.

I wonder what buckle he is using. I have to disconnect the wire on that middle buckle for every tongue swap.

You know i can't really argue with that. I;m just glad the Euros decide not to screw NorAm by just keeping Khion and ditching Vulcan

Yeah, Im sure there's more than meets that eye in that picture, but it seems like replacing the current lean lock plate in the spine with a longer one would be the simple solution.

Maybe removing the inner spine all together is better for the flex quality.

So what is the difference between next year's Vulcan and the Mercury of a few years ago? I thought the main difference was that the old Vulcan had a carbon cuff and the old Mercury had a non carbon cuff that seems a lot like the one on next years Vulcan? And they want to charge more for the new Vulcan than the old Vulcan? I need to devote more time to surfing gear news on the internet so I don't ask so many stupid questions.

Yeah, that buckle sucks. Its annoying to have to entirely undo it to swap the tongues in and out (and it seems odd they put the little latch thing to hold the buckle in place to make it even harder). Any messed around with replacing it? The ratchet might work, but even a different buckle that wasnt so freaking fiddly, like from a Krypton or something.... Even if you still had to undo the buckle, but a different one without the oval shaped wire thing that is hard to get in place, it would be better

I think some folks may have ground out that square locating nub to make tongue changes easier??

I've heard that as well, but I think you would still have to undo the middle buckle. Just not enough room under the buckle to get the tongue in
