    MPC #78 - Weather (1/3-1/17)

    MPC #78 Weather

I do severe weather photography on the side, and last year got a chance to chase with the Storm Chasers crew from Discovery. I love weather (especially when it snows here when it's supposed to). Show us how you see the weather!

    You know the routine. GO!

    RULES:
    1. Photos must be taken within the time period of the contest.
    2. You may submit 3 photos during the competition.
    3. The contest moderator will choose 5 photos to be voted on.
    4. The winner will get a happy feeling in his/her pants. (That is a rule by the way, not an option.)
    5. In the event of a tie, the contest moderator will have the deciding vote.
    6. Winner will be the contest starter/moderator for the next comp.
    7. The winner has 3 days to start a new contest or 2nd place becomes the new winner.

    This winter sucks.

I agree, however the State of California decided to cancel weather this winter due to budget cuts. I don't think a picture of an empty blue sky is too moving.

Yeah, and there are figurative interpretations as well. I like this theme. And we have through the holiday weekend to get after it. And the entire X-mas family and travel time thing is over. Hoping for a lot of good submissions here!

Two separate shots taken from the same place, then layer masked in PS. I got the inspiration/stole the idea from Stephen Wilkes (go to Fine Art > Day to Night).

That's what I figured. I've just never been able to get a clean transition. Looks good!

I'm not sure if I like a lot of those. He's certainly talented and it's an intriguing concept. "Park Avenue" and "The Flatiron" have a ghostbusters quality to them.

"coney Island" though, I think works pretty well. Your shot makes me wonder how it might look in the mountains.

edit to add: Some of those other galleries are crazy awesome. I really liked "Bethlehem Steel." The Katrina one is fucking awesome.

Wet snow falling and my wife who is nearly 36 WEEKS (thanks CW!) pregnant - with twins. You can hardly tell from behind. The winter here in N. Bavaria has been pretty crappy too. Bunch of days with wet snow falling, but nothing sticking. Just too warm.

I typically don't like that type of stuff, but "Flatiron" is pretty bad ass. It clearly shows what he was trying to do with the image moreso than the others (IMO).

36 months? Those kids are gonna walk out on their own.

Some really cool lenticulars over the front range of the N. Cascades today (most notably Three Fingers and Whitehorse) but I didn't know the area well enough to be able to pull off the freeway and drive up into the hills and find a place to shoot them. Too far away from the freeway to make a compelling shot.

I knew the "day and night" concept might seem gimmicky and wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but these MPC's often give me a chance to experiment, and the idea looked interesting enough to try out. One thing I realized is that the transition cannot be haphazard. If there's a natural straight-line visual division in the scene (e.g. in "The Flatiron"), then a single straight-line transition works. Otherwise, a more complicated transition works better (e.g. in "Park Avenue").

Are you a mormon? Great photo. You don't need good gear to make good images (you just need good gear to print good images)
