Avalanche closes part of US 550 in Colorado


DURANGO – An avalanche has covered part of U.S. 550 over Red Mountain Pass in southwestern Colorado.
The highway was closed around 7 p.m. Friday because of the slide. There were no immediate reports of any vehicles being trapped.
The Colorado Department of Transportation says the 10-foot slide was reported to be blocking 90 percent of the roadway.

The avalanche danger for the Northern San Juan zone is CONSIDERABLE (Level 3) near and above treeline on west through north to east aspects. The danger is MODERATE (Level 2) on all other aspects near and above treeline, and on west through north to northeast aspects below treeline. Elsewhere below treeline the danger is LOW (Level 1)
