Mixed bag for my kiddo racing this year. She stepped up into age class racing, and was generally back of the back (not DFL but close). That really disappointed her, as she hasn't quite realized yet that you have to get joy from the activity and not the finish number. She also had a broken arm and missed a month, and that certainly didn't help (her skiing or her confidence).
That said, there were a couple of highlights. First was when we went freesking at Mary Jane (we hardly ever get to ski together). She was able to keep up and ski pretty much everything, bumps, trees, whatever. It was like skiing with a friend, not skiing with a kid I needed to take care of.
And re her ski racing, well, last year at the end of season race party, where the kids get to race their parents, she and I were fairly even when I made tele turns, and she couldn't beat me if I made alpine turns (on my teles). This year, she SMOKED me when I made tele turns (many gates ahead), and when I made alpine turns, she still smoked me, just by a little less (a couple of gates ahead). It wasn't close.
That was clear evidence -- to her and me -- of how much she's improved this year, and how much faster she is, and her race results are only disappointing to her because of the speed/talent of those she's racing against, and not that she's standing still. This was pretty awesome for both of us to see, and it made her day.
