Photojournalist / Reporter / Skier -- Just got laid off

I'm 26. I live in Boise Idaho. I just got laid off today.



I'm a professional video journalist (I've worked for Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS) ... and also a professional scuba diving instructor if that factors in at all.

I moved to Idaho less than a year ago for this job because I wanted to go from Minnesota (no mountains) to a place where I could slay pow and work on awesome outdoors-oriented TV stories.

Looks like that's not going to happen....

Anybody out there looking for a skier with a college degree, professional writing and video experience and technical skills?

This isn't exactly what you are looking for, but it is something that might work. From Friday's Idaho Mountain Express.

ONLINE NEWS EDITOR

The Idaho Mountain Express newspaper has an opening for a part-time Online Daily News Editor. The Express—recognized repeatedly by the National Newspaper Association as one of the best community newspapers in the country—has a strong tradition of providing award-winning news coverage. The successful candidate should have a relevant college degree and at least three years of reporting and editing experience. Some experience working on fast-paced breaking news and Web news is also desired. Must be good with computers.

The position is a part-time, 15-hour-a-week role that demands a variety of skills, from reporting on emergencies and fires to editing Web briefs submitted by other reporters. Thanks for the suggestion on the Mountain Express. I haven't heard back from the editor yet, but I'll keep you posted.

Anybody else have a good job idea that would keep me in the snow? I fear I might have to move back the wastelands of the midwest.

Before you give up and move back to the midwest, you could look out here in Northern CA. You might be able to score a position with one of the news stations in Sac and you'd only be two hours from Tahoe. (Or maybe even live in Tahoe, which is within the Sac stations' "sphere".)

News? - 3 time National Press Photographers Association Best Photography Staff of the Year. Amazing Stories.

Check out KTUU-TV and KTVA in Anchorage, Alaska. I'm a former news photographer with KTUU, moved on to bigger and better money in Ad Agency work, but KTUU was great place to work, and the coolest stories...Subhunters of Adak? Iditarod? Flying in a Blackhawk to sling water buckets on a wildfire? FKNA Right...


Are you an NPPA member? I know and worked with both the Chiefs at 2 & 11. put together a tape an a resume, and I will put you in touch with them

Anchorage also has killer backcountry just over an hour away. Last weekend there was more than 3ft of fresh pow on the top layer.. Great skiing.

There are a few guys (friends of friends) in Anchorage that run AlaskaHDTV - a podcast and video series on outdoor AK life. If the Alaska idea sounds appealing, you should shoot them an email and see what they're working on.

There's also an 'Alaska Channel' group that appears to do contracted footage. I'm not sure how their business is doing, but it's always worth a call or email! (www.alaskachannel.com).
