PSA: Mount your own fucking skis.

i have a pair of 2023 / 2024 salamon qst 98 (and another pair of the women's model) but I can't find what size or depth to drill for them either on the ski or on a tech guide. The QST page for 24/25 lists that the ski has a titanal plate underfoot so I'm guessing I should be drilling 4.1mm wide / 9mm depth since I don't think the ski changed between this and last year. Can anyone confirm or help point me in the right direction to find out more info?

4.1x9 for anything with metal. wouldn't hurt to tap with a 12ab if you have one.

^^^ I’m no tech with twenty years experience. But yeah. Anything titinal is 4.1. Otherwise it’s the small bit (3.9? I forget)

Some tap titinal. I never have.

As for depth it only matters for kid skis.

Picked up stepped bits a few years ago. Highly recommended. Punches 4.1 through the top sheet. But narrower in the wood core

how can i be sure the ski has titanal? i can't find a listing for the 23/24 qst 98 that mentions it being underfoot, i only saw that on the 24/25 listing

^^^ after you punch your marks drill a small pilot hole. If you see metal it has titinal underfoot.

If you have both bits, drill the first one with the small bit. Again. If you see silver it’s got metal. Then go big

The other thing is that without metal the bit goes in quick. With metal it takes a few more turns of the drill.

PS. If it’s your first mount watch out for impact drivers. I use them. But just to start.
Always hand tighten the finish.
Or you use a drill and set the clutch properly. But if you don’t know don’t go.
Once the screw is almost down, use your hands.

Spinners are fun in bed. Not in skis.

I’m surprised there’s nothing marked at all on the sidewall or topsheet. You’ve got the easiest answer already in this thread and elsewhere, if you’re not confident in your ability to drill a lil baby pilot hole with a 1/16th bit and check for metal shavings then maybe you shouldn’t MYOFS after all. But if you’re determined not to check for yourself and want to rely on a tech manual (which aren’t always accurate re ski construction anyways), I’m not aware of any changes to the skis layup in the past year. I’d take the info you found on the 24-25 ski mount plate as good enough for govt work and send ‘er with a 4.1.

I have a set of armada white walkers I bought used.. might reuse the old holes but might move the mount. topsheet says 4.1 bit but there's no metal.

im not too worried about it, but curious what others think

I thought Armadas spec’s a stepped bit of [emoji639].[emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]] to [emoji640].[emoji637]. [emoji640].[emoji637] for their topsheets and [emoji639].[emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]] for the core.

I know HL recommends the 4.1.. but im not sure how solid the core of these armadas are compared to HL.


AlpiNord: I know armada has their stepped bit, I can't find the chart but the top sheet on the white walkers says 4.1 x 9

First of three mounts done. Was gonna do the Optics next but there seems to be a dearth of 4.1x9.5s in my tool box. Gonna have to order one, dammit.

In the meantime, the lovely Ms EWG is stoked on her Pandoras...

Also, FWIW, SFB is a stand up dude IRL and has taken care of issues for me just out of kindness. Respect for sure.

I use a 5/32 AKA 3.96875 mm and so best of all its to the 5 places

If no metal, i always drill 3.6mm and then tap holes.

New sticks for the kiddo mounted up. Gonna ski indoors at the mall tomorrow for shits and giggles, hee hee.

Grabbed a set of Head (aka Tyrolia) EVO 9 GW CA junior bindings , so figured they would have junior length (6mm depth )screws in them , but inside the box was this somewhat cryptic message . There is also one small baggie w 4 extra screws in it , 2 shorter , 2 longer. WTH am I supposed to use? Are the stock screws not the correct ones? This is for a Moment Carson that specified it needs junior bindings.

Skis are marked w 3.5x7.5 drill , looks like about 13 mm thick. Looks like the current screws go about 8mm deep

I’d bet the screws in the extra baggie are for use with a race plate/shims.

Like AlpiNord said, double check the amount of screw sticking out from below the binding against the ski. If they look good, send it.
