I haven't bothered with a vape since I discovered carbon filtration for bongs. Although my klutz of a friend smashing the heating element in my Extreme Q played just as big a part, I like the depth of flavor that smoke provides. Plus, I have never found a vape that gets me "there" in fewer than 10 or 12 tokes. 2 good pulls off the carbon tube and I'm set.

I just picked up a nice beaker bottom, 12 inch tall hand blown tube when I was in Portland last. Not brand name, but it looks nice, is short enough to fit on my kitchen counter under the cabinets, and it doesn't have any internal percs or showerheads, so it's easy to keep clean. Then I just have a nice, albeit not very expensive diffused downstem, a Scientific Inhalations carbon filter (they're the best, IMHO, as you don't need a glass jack to keep the carbon in, it has a diffuser integrated into it), and then some random bowl/ashcatcher combo. The ashcatcher doesn't add a ton of filtration, but it does catch all the solids so the carbon stays cleaner for longer.

Usually run about 5-7 grams through the carbon before I change it out, although it's cheap enough that you could easily change it sooner for truly premium flavor.

I purchased the carbon filter, second downstem, and ashcatcher through aqualabtechnologies.com I personally prefer a simple tube, with no internal diffusers or percs. They're a pain in the ass to keep clean. Having your filtration be modular and in-line makes for much quicker and easier cleaning.

Using the carbon filter requires a slight modification of technique for hits; it's all about the long, slow draw. The water in your ash catcher should be bubbling like a simmering saucepan, and no more. Once you have it dialed, you can take staggeringly large hits that are as smooth and tasty as perfect Sierra windbuff.

So the carbon filter can be put on any glass with proper fitting? Got a link to decent entry level one, I may want to try increasing carbon levels in the atmosphere of my living room -

That's correct, they make them in 14 or 18mm joint sizes, they plug into the downstem, then you attach your bowl to the other end of it.

Here's a link to the SI brand ones. I have a "regular, 14mm" one with the integrated glass diffuser/carbon retainer. No metal or plastic for me, thanks. The "Ultra" filters are just a bit longer, and thus hold more carbon.

I'd just sprinkle it on flower and listen to old Bowie. Prefer unpressed on flower myself.

Looks pretty impressive. Ice water and dry ice extracted hashes are by far my favorite form of combustible. Nothing better than a fat patty of water hash and a magnifying glass for ignition.

I like your carbon filter thing. I still smoke flowers and hash. Tried a Pax, but it didn't seem as good to me. $pendy and mine quit after. Few months. Don't have access to wax and shatter and stuff around here, and I only want to use dry ice or ice water myself. Keep it simple. I have tons of last year's bud and this year's trim to play with.

Only done 2-3 ice water batches and a 1/2 dozen dry ice. Dry ice seems more productive than bubble bags to me but maybe I'm doing it wrong. I watched a video...

Correct, that's how it works. Although I prefer the filter with the glass, not the metal screen like the specific one you linked to.

Thanks, I like the carbon filter a lot too. I dig your hash, wish I had the quantity of odds and ends needed for a good batch. I have a Pax as well, and while I enjoy it, it's time consuming to clean, and it doesn't compare to table top vapes. Plus, I enjoy the process of smoking, especially when I can polish off a 0.5g bowl in one pull, with nothing more than a tickle in my throat on the exhale.
