My east coast surf experiences is limited to New England growing up (Pt. Judith represent!). My parents just moved to Vero. Anything consistent near by? I know the fishing is great but I wanna find some waves.
What ya got? Frizzo?

I've been through there a few times, and know the area.
Vero itself doesn't have the greatest surfing unless it's a good northeast blow...then it's best to head to South Beach...which is the beach directly east of the 17th ave bridge.
Otherwise it's best to head 10 or 15 miles to Sebastian Inlet..that's the exact beach where Kelly Slater surfed and grew up as young grom...crazily talented even at the young age of 11.
Another good alternative and in between sebastian inlet and vero is a place called Wabaso Beach. The surf is usually rolling hard there, but it's got a wicked nasty shore break at tmes.
The only other decent place is near Vero that is not an inlet is called Avalon Beach...actually a beautiful beach..not built up at all. Dunes and sawgrass and trees...no condos or houses. Avalon is about 10 miles south of vero.
Only other decent place near vero is a few miles south of. Avalon beach....it's called Fort Pierce Inlet State Park in Fort Pierce. Because it's at an inlet, the breaks are usually pretty decent.
But all things considered, Sebastian Inlet is well known as the best surfing in Florida..not that it's Maui or Santa Cruz or anything like that...but it is similar to Montauk, so you should feel at home.

Sebastian can be great. Nice thumping wedge. A few places just north of that.
I surfed Vero once. Fast, stand up wall to close out. Got the shit knocked out of me and vomitted on the beach. Good times as a teen.
You should find something near by. Generally heavier than the points of R.I.. esp. when small. soid beach break.
Thanks for the info. I think Avalon is right by my folks. They are about 7 miles south of vero proper. I hear ya on the close out beach break action. Better learn how to ride something other that a log.
Alaskan and OT provided good info. I haven't surfed Vero, but Fort Pierce Inlet is a friendly, fairly easy wave, especially compared to Sebastian and Spanish house and other points north.
The place can get incredibly crowded, but usually it's full of families, kooks, and old dudes so the vibe is mellow.
I did snake an 8-year-old once on a 2-foot day and got mad stink eye. Hey, I'm old -- my wave days are limited.
One cool thing about Fort Pierce if you're local is, you can get a yearly pass to the park and they give you a combination to the gate. That way you can get in @ dawn and surf pretty uncrowded waves until they open to the masses @ 9 AM. They're pretty strict so don't expect to sneak in behind someone with a combo -- if there's a ranger inside and there usually is they'll tell you to leave.
The fishing there is ridiculous. If you come in September you can surf with migrating mullet, and the sharks, tarpon, and giant snook and jacks that are feeding on them. It's bananas.
Watch out for the landloard out there,
I got spooked by a Mako who dive bombed me and a pal at Sebastian Inslet. There were mad fishing boats in the water that september day which definately attracked the mako shark.
Stayed out of the water the rest of the day.

Lots of good info in here. I visit my parents down there usually once a year. The best waves I've experienced have been at South Beach. Sebastian has been blown out or flat every time I've been up there; no luck on the timing I guess. The inlet has crazy currents and we almost capsized the old mans boat navigating our way out of it! I heard Vero Pier used to have good sand bars, but a hurricane wiped it out some years ago. A rebuilt version is in it's place, but it's not very big.
Foggy- my neighbor grew up there. I'll get you the info.
I am still trying to figure out who the F you are from T-ville.
The guy I thought you were, just moved to Sweden or something. Guess that wasn't you.
You know Matt Maletta? He just posted these photos from the "Perfect Storm" storm in 1991.

moi? Brevard County repazent! Vero Beach aka Zero beach. Just kidding. Never been that far south coz the waves peter out after Sebastien. If you want to check out some good surf and not be the sharkbait at Sebastien, check out Patrick AFB and Satellite Beach area. Best in the area IMHO.
