    Riding Giants on DVD

Picked up the Riding Giants DVD last night. Great flick. I can't wait to watch it again with the commentaries. Nice extras, too.

i mean, stacey perelta's voice is whiny enough, but add george's voice (and his spew legacy from Surfer) and it all gets to be a bit much.

i'm not sure why perelta would get Sean Penn to do Dogtown, then do Riding Giants himself.

I watched the director/editors' commentary last night- they wanted to get Penn do do this one, but there were various reasons it didn't happen- mainly Sony wanted the film released by the summer and there wasn't time to get Sean to narrate.

I also learned that we owe Warren Miller a bit of gratitude on this film- he sold Greg Noll the 16mm camera he used to shoot a lot of the early North Shore footage.

I've never surfed. I know nothing about Sam George. I know Stacy Peralta by name only.

But I thought Riding Giants was GREAT!

Watched it last night...great movie. Liked the Mavericks segment the best. Should serve as a reminder to be careful who you show your secret spot to.

By that shit, I gather you mean Mavericks? How does a spot like that go undiscovered for so long. How does one man surf a break like Mavericks by himself for 15 years. I loved the movie, but the Mavericks segment seems like washing up on an island only to discover Jurassic park.

Because it was always considered a nasty gnar spot with big sharks and cold water.

Nobody had the balls to ride it, well except for one person.

Honestly seeing what its done to Clark and Flea, I wouldn't dare go out there.
Those two have gotten lucky out there so many times. More lives than a shelter full of cats.

That makes a lot more sense.

Actually, you can't see Mavericks from the road. you would never be driving down PCH and look over and say "hey - let's check out that wave." You have to drive down some back roads and then get out and hike to get there. the waves both to the North and South are all very modest waves. I can surf the waves to the south of Mavs, and since I'm the world's crappiest, wimpiest surfer, that tells you what they're like.

most people STILL don't realize Mavericks is there. It's good and tucked away.

But in addition, even those who know about it aren't likely to jump out there very quickly. It's truly one of the nastiest waves in the world, and it's not your everyday surfer who's going to head out there.

I run into Jeff Clark in the coffee shop I go to - he's got to be one crazy SOB to have been surfing out there for 15 years on his own.

Mavericks is quite hidden away out there isnt it?
It took me an hour of driving pretty much in circles to finally get to the right spot.
    and...no...I didnt surf it.

Saw it this past weekend, that wave off Tahiti was NUTS! I think somebody posted pictures of that on here before. Greg Noll is friggin cool as hell, lotta respect for that guy getting out there and taking on those big waves at ahhh...where was it? Waiamaia? am I even close to spelling that right? Really loved the segment about the guys on Hawaii living on the beach, catching their own food and just living the life of a beach bum surfer. good shite.

anyways, I really dug the movie. I assume you guys are talking how annoying that guy from Surfer magazine was...what a friggin pickle. I'm sure he's a good surfer and blah blah blah but he comes off as a coked-up fucknut in the movie.
