airplane mode is good to help eliminate cell signal interference but remember it is still an electronic device that needs to be kept >6" away from a sending beacon and >12" away from a receiving beacon.

I was at a talk last week about the history of skiing in the wasatch and they talked about two types of 'climbers'. one was skins and the other was weaving/twisting/tying a rope around your skis. And i think this could be the new trend, its gotta be lighter than skins and better than those voile no skins, fishscale, only climbs 20 degree slopes bullshit

UDOT plans to conduct artillery work in Little Cottonwood Canyon tomorrow (2/10/12) between 11am and 1pm. A closure will be in effect on all slopes north of the canyon road between Gates B and D (Entry 4).

Nothing personal but the $$$ to knowledge and time and instruction being bestoyed ratio of the universities non avvy cert semester long snow stability class is blowing away the $$ I spent on the fuac avvy 2 cert course.
Not sure why the cert costs similiar for way less instruction and way less field time.
Perhaps a high cost to become avvy cert instructor?

There are still spots open for the Monday event at Snowbird. We will end the registration at 6 am Saturday. We will have a more complete description out tomorrow, but in general we will work on terrain management, do stability analysis and learn more about the science behind the snowpack we appear stuck with, and talk human factors. There is a good chance that a rescue scenario will emerge (conditions are tricky) and not be a simple beacon search. The difference between this and other classes is that we will focus on the current weird snowpack, what we can do with it and what we might expect, and talk more about managing complicated terrain and situations, thinking more of being on Monte Cristo or the Olympus Coulouirs (did I say that? There's no skiing there..) than crossing a slope 1 at a time in Meadow Chutes.

The class will not require you to do significant travel uphill. It would be good to have skins as we will break into groups and an uphill -travel capable group might do a few different things, but that won't be a requirement.

The UAC doesn't teach Level 1 and 2 classes anymore - there are a couple of other groups around that do a great job with those and we have gotten a great response to more focused topical classes that aren't available anywhere else. We think of the L1 & 2 classes as prerequisites to serious bc skiing and our classes as special topics electives. We plan to keep student/instructor ratio to about 6.

$35 is a screaming deal. We will not cover our costs on this and are doing it because a) we want to and can and b) we have some good sponsors that take care of us.

Couldn't agree more. This is pretty much the norm for a lot of places in the US (http://www.mtavalanche.com/current). When I see the UAC call these conditions 'different' and 'weird' in the description for an advanced avalanche class I have to wonder WTF? This is avalanche 101 stuff here. Some people in the Wasatch have gotten away with ignoring basic avy safety skills for a long time, and this year that can get you in trouble. I had a friend from Colorado who tours a lot out there come to town last winter and we did some touring. Talk about being a nazi about safe travel protocol, wonder why?
