East facing snowtrap from 8,200-10,000 skied rock free and smooth. Blowing fairly good up high today. Some wind transport.

We didn't ski cardiac. Although it looks like I might poke around there tomorrow. We dug a few pits on the way up. (8,200-10,000 East) A few density changes in the top two feet of snow, that were stubborn to pull out. We dug all the way to the ground almost 6 feet deep in the gut of the chute with less faceting than we were expecting from the oct snow.

Anybody who took part in the rescue of an injured skier, at Alta, in High Greely/Gunsight/3rd's/Greely Bowl on Sunday, November 13th, who lent clothing to the injured skier, ought to stop by the main office at Alta Ski Area to collect those items.

4-6" of new fluff at around 10,000ft today. Nice turns on low angle, north aspects. No settling or whoomping heard on the mellow tour.

Nice day in the hills. No wind, perfect temps.

Lots of jibbers hanging out in the woods gettin' funky.

Little over 2ft at around 10k. Didn't have time to get all techy, Alex was getting pissed.

My observation from today, surface hoar growth overnight from 7500-10k s-wnw facing. Seems like it will have more time to grow, possibly be preserved by some flurries. potential hazard for the future. What else can we add to our shitty pack?

By early to mid January all memories of the preseason snowpack are usually long gone. This scenario seems to play itself out just about every other year or more. Good time to just cluck around the mountains and relax, build fitness, and let the twitch factor grow inside your mind.

yeah PROVO, noticed bits of surface hoar growing in White Pine this morning and was really surprised at how fast it sprouted. kinda figured with a few days of not much going on who knows...temps, wind, etc. Anywhooo, I agree with Trackhead. Just dilly dallying around. Hard to say what details are important and what are mintua. I'm not quite there yet.

SFB - btw how are weather predictions not relevant to backcountry conditions? (maybe i'll regret asking that) isn't weather pertinent to ski conditions? isn't the time in which backcountry skiers make his/her decisions very short? is pertinent too big a word?

"You don't need a weather man. To know which way the wind blows" I'm all for hippies but if I don't live up the canyon I'm less in tune with what's going on. AKA Nov 13th

My dad just measured my growth with a pencil mark on the door. Wasatch skiers use the snowpack. Classic.

First post and would appreciate some advice. Short story, heading out from the east coast to ski for 3-4 days with my 75 year old dad from the 9th -14th at Alta. Why am I going so early in the season ? Closing on a house on the 15th and won't be able to go anywhere for a while so it was the only window I could fit it in. Question, how bad is it really out there at Alta/Bird ? Just looking to screw around on groomers and have a good time. Most troubling thing is this high pressure is supposed to lock hold for the next two weeks so it doesn't look promising. Wondering if we should just bail on the flight and rebook down the road. Thanks everyone and I'll sit back and listen.

Groomers? Does not compute. (Hint: find the Bird thread - this is a bc thread)
